7. Wow, I've been listening and watching the video and it is....
...really eye-opening as to how the republican majority wishes to conduct hearings of this kind. I have not completed viewing all of the testimony, but I have seen enough to conclude that Rep. Sensenbrenner needs to be censured by the House for his conduct unbecoming to a Hose Committee Chairperson and an elected Representative of the house. I hope others will view this video in it's entirety. I believe that Rep Sensenbrenner needs to make a public and personal apology to the four witnesses he intimidated, to the democratic members of the committee who he accused of having no interest in the hearings because they were not present, but who indeed were in the hearing chamber before the hearing started and returned to the chamber, and also Mt Sensenbrenner needs to apologize to the American people for his outright display of contempt for the democratic processes and abuses of the house rules relative to giving witnesses and committee members proper time to complete their testimony and statements. I think also that the republican committee members who have talked so far, have used the forum time to proselytize their points of view, wasting value committee time through filibuster and interruption of continuity in the testimony, further denying a full hearing on the matter.

These are just some of my observations after watching a little over 80 minutes of the committee video so far. I will return to the last 40 minutes shortly. I just wanted to post my reaction and outrage at the conduct of the majority and the majority chairman.

8. Thanks for your gracious insight ....
and I agree with every word you said. It is a sad time for our democracy when someone as this guy has the power to slamm that gavel, and storm off after the way he controled this hearing. Even more tragic because everything else being said in the room after was officially off the record. You could hear Rep Sheila Jackson Lee in the background asking "if there was any press in the room that wants to hear our story" or something to the effect. And then Rep Jerrold Nadler's closing speech as the mic was being turned off and on ...... I flashed back to the seen in the recent Star Wars movie of Natalie Portman stating "So this is how liberty dies ........" Anyway just some thoughts back at ya. Yea everyone should watch this whole video, and not just the last 10 minute snip. Peace. :)

12. Randi just said that in addition to the four witnesses who were
...allowed to testify, the democrats had Arab American detainees in the audience who were there to testify on how they had been detained without recourse by the Patriot Act, librarians were in the audience to testify on law enforcement abuses against them forcing them to release records under the Patriot Act to give names of people checking out certain books. Sensenbrenner and the majority would not allow any of that testimony or witnesses be heard.

Randi is back on.

16. I'm going to catch Randi on her re-broadcast this afternoon
on the West Coast. Gotta run some errands now though. Thanks for the conversation Whistle, hang in there. Oh one last thought, the only thing this Sensenbrenner guy seemed to want was the Librarians names. :wtf: was that all about. A 'hearing' to testify on the wrongs of the Patriot act, and here is this guy I BELIEVE going to use the stupid act to see if he could prosecute the Librarians, or investigate them. Not to be as gracious as yourself ...... and IMHO .... the guy is a pig. :) Catch ya later. Peace.

13. OK, so I just watched the whole 2 hour video
It doesn't make any sense to me. Sensenbrenner made those nasty remarks at the beginning, the thing went on for almost 2 hours, and he just out of the blue jumped in and banged the gavel. What was the point?

15. Sensenbenner was forced by House rules to hold the hearing,
just don't think he had any intentions of holding a FAIR one.

He cut people off, ignored the usual rule of letting a witness complete their answer - five minutes and five minutes only for a Rep. to ask a question and then the witness to answer. Of course, the reps didn't bother to ask too many questions. One time one of them rethugs asked a push and loaded question and continued on until his time was up and the witness was not allowed to answer. He was just getting it on the record that he asked and it will now say the witness did not answer.

Anybody know if the Dems can request another hearing and another and another until Sensenbenner and the rethugs finally get the idea that they have to allow some discussion?

22. Yeah, I saw all that
Coble and Lungren were especially vile. I didn't understand what the Repubs' point was of letting it go for almost 2 hours before just shutting it down like that. Was it just to be especially vile?

14. Mmmm? Wonder if any corporate media will run some footage tonight?
Juicy video is a premium. If it's really juicy, some producer out there in newsland might decide to show the citizens how thier elected"representatives" are behaving.

GOP Chairman Walks Out of Meeting

WASHINGTON - The Republican chairman walked off with the gavel, leaving Democrats shouting into turned-off microphones at a raucous hearing Friday on the Patriot Act.

The House Judiciary Committee hearing, with the two sides accusing each other of being irresponsible and undemocratic, came as President Bush was urging Congress to renew those sections of the post-Sept. 11 counterterrorism law set to expire in September.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the panel, abruptly gaveled the meeting to an end and walked out, followed by other Republicans. Sensenbrenner declared that much of the testimony, which veered into debate over the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, was irrelevant.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., protested, raising his voice as his microphone went off, came back on, and went off again.

21. Rep Wasserman-Schultz has posted on her website
She is pissed off, has already smoked Sensenbrenner with a press release, and provided a vidio link:

Democracy thwarted at Judiciary Committee Hearing on the Patriot Act
Chairman silences Democrats at a hearing on the Patriot Act by cutting the microphones

http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/fl20_schultz/judgavelledoff.html

~snip~

Particularly shameful acts of the majority Republican during this morning’s Judiciary Committee Hearing:

1. The most egregious abuse was that the Chairman clearly violated the Rules of the House by adjourning the hearing based solely on his own authority. In order to end a hearing, the Chair must make a Unanimous Consent request or a motion to adjourn. Mr. Sensenbrenner did neither. Additionally, he adjourned the hearing based solely on his own authority while Mr. Nadler was attempting to raise a point of order (arguably to highlight this fact), which constitutes a clear abuse of House Rules. Subject to our discretion, this could constitute a privilege to be raised on the House floor. It can also be argued that this violation was particularly egregious given that this was the Minority’s day of hearings. (begins at 1:51:00 on video)

2. After the Chairman illegally adjourned the hearing, the Majority then attempted to cut the microphone of Mr. Nadler who was attempting to raise a point of order about the adjournment. (begins at 1:52:25 on video)

3. The Chairman refused on numerous occasions to recognize Members attempting to raise Points of Order or Points of Personal Privilege. For example, he refused to recognize both Ms. Jackson-Lee Ms. Wasserman-Schultz at the beginning of the hearing. (begins at 17:45 on video or 19:15)
