people are starting to get pissed off
on both sides. we only THOUGHT we were pissed off a few months back, now americans of all stripes are getting pissed off. and the common themes seem to be worry about the state of the union, and the every rising price of EVERYTHING.

things are getting ugly. the people are revolting. it's a greek tragedy, we can only watch it go down.

1. Here is my letter to Chairman Jud. Sensenbrenner..
Similar in nature to my letter to Voinovich, who personally replied to me and the New York times has also replied (Brian Calame has thanked everyone for the information!)

"Dear House Judiciary Chairman,

I can absolutely understand how under your governing house rules, the
meeting on Patriot Act abuses had gone off-topic and nonetheless was
failing to be under the house rules term limits.

It was dragging on perhaps in some respects, and had exceeded its timeframe.

Nonetheless, it is not okay under any circumstances the behavior that
was exhibited here.

You essentially shut down an open hearing, which was to resolve a
matter very serious even deliberately important to our national
security. How do other countries view the actions you took on your
Gavel?

How is it Chairman, that one rule of law should be the only rule of
law considering the facts displayed in our constitution? I advise you
to really look deeply into these matters, sir as you have displayed
actions that are out of line. They were simply inappropriate for any
republican or democrat, to automatically call a close to these vital
prisoner abuse hearings which in essence show the future types of
interrogations which can be allowed.

For the sense of decency that is in true america, reflect on your actions.

"Washington - Following repeated Democratic criticism of the Bush
administration, House Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr.
(R-Wis.) on Friday gaveled a hearing to a close and walked out while
Democrats continued to testify - but with their microphones shut off.

The hearing's announced topic was the USA Patriot Act, which granted
broad new powers to federal law enforcement after the attacks of Sept.
11, 2001. The Republicans presented several witnesses who supported
the administration's call for reauthorizing the legislation. But when
four witnesses hand-picked by the Democrats launched into a broad
denunciations of President Bush's war on terror and the condition of
detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Sensenbrenner showed his pique.

He urged witnesses to "wrap it up" and repeatedly told Democratic
committee members that their time for questioning had expired.

"We ought to stick to the subject," the chairman said at the end. "The
Patriot Act has nothing to do with Guantanamo Bay. The Patriot Act has
nothing to do with enemy combatants. The Patriot Act has nothing to do
with indefinite detentions."

"Will the gentleman yield?" Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) asked.

"No, I will not yield," replied Sensenbrenner, who is known for a
brusque insistence on decorum. He completed his reproof of the
witnesses and left the Rayburn House Office Building hearing room amid
a cacophony of protests from Democrats seeking to be recognized."

http://www.jsonline.com/news/nat/jun05/332943.asp

Sir, I don't propose to change your mind on what these recent abuses
are. What I wish is for you to consider what is being done here. The
american public deserves an apology for this display, regardless of
how heated the hearings were.

You are talking about the very civil rights of thousands of people, it
is not an issue one can take lightly.

If the Patriot Act was so off-subject, why was it these very
provisions being debated in the Judiciary? I don't believe that acting
so anti-democratic will solve anything in resolving our image in the
world abroad.

Chairman Sensenbrenner, your duty is to uphold the constitution at
whatever cost. Your duty as a sworn legislature on the bench is to
hold power accountable to their actions. Instead you have used it to
shut down an open democratic hearing and forum. If that is the way
things are run, you should not even hold the position. When did you
forget what your duty was? When did you let the simple matters of
power take precedence over the people? Try to remember when you were
once like the rest of us, Sensenbrenner.

This is not the way to make the world change. The Bush administration
has lied on all many manner of abuses, and has deceived the public.
The abuses need to be held accountable to, not ignored or stricken
from the record.

You can say in your mind "Well, this is all just like Reagan and it
will all pass." But the facts are, Chairman Sensenbrenner, it will not
just pass. The american people are suffering for these many abuses, as
are thousands upon millions the world abroad.

They do not have your best interests at heart, and you know this
Sensenbrenner. Yet you continue to simply declare this issue null and
void, and the patriot act should not be delayed. Whatever abuses the
Bush Administration gets away with, you turn a blind eye to. You don't
mind if lower level officials get indicted, and investigations into
abuse transpire. You do mind in dealing with anything in the
administration, or having to face to it. Do you realize this war is
out of control yet? Do you realize that ignoring this does not make it
go away? Republicans and Democrats everywhere are becoming
increasingly disturbed by these events. It isn't changing anything.
Just search your own conscience, Chairman.

I plead that you search your conscience and find the focus inside to
do what is right, not what they say god wants. You do not really
believe god wanted minutemen on the borders, thousands of lives lost
in Iraq, or civilians killed and slaughtered. I can not believe you
do, because I do not get that impression.

You do not believe god ever wanted to condone the amount of torture or
atrocities committed here, and forced upon them by the Administration.
If you truly have it in you still, speak the truth and stop agreeing
with them.

For the good of our country, set the record straight, and for once in
all your serving speak truth to power. Stop giving them a free pass.
It's hurting millions of people.

Signed,

A concerned Citizen Roger in Utah "

It would be interesting to see if unlike the out of office reply he reads all of it....

24. Running against Sensenbrenner--spread the word
Hello:

My name is Bryan Kennedy and I am challenging House Judiciary Chair Jim Sensenbrenner. I was his opponent in 2004 and gave him the best fight he had had to date. I have kept the campaign going and am aggressively fund raising to beat him in 2006. 2004 recap for those unfamiliar--raised roughly $300K, got nearly 140,000 votes, placed 10,000 yard signs and won in areas of the district where we have no elected Democrats. Not bad for a first run for political office.

Thanks for all that you have been debating and discussing Sensenbrenner's actions on DU since the committee meeting yesterday. THANKS ALSO TO EVERYONE WHO WENT TO MY WEBSITE OVERNIGHT AND GAVE MONEY!! You all are fantastic. This incident is indicative of Sensenbrenner's reaction to everything--scream and pout first, then storm out later. Imagine trying to debate him!! (Not an easy undertaking when he gets red-faced and angry, and takes criticisms of his voting record or legislation personally.)

I am at the Wisconsin state Democratic Party convention in Oshkosh and last night I had the privilege of speaking to approximately 1,300 delegates. I mentioned Sensenbrenner's actions of earlier in the day as illustrative of why we need to get rid of him (not to mention the PATRIOT Act itself, the REAL ID bill, Sensenbrenner's drug policy bill from last month, his authoring of the Terry Schiavo legislation, and on and on and on...) Sensenbrenner and his Republican majority need to remember their 1994 Contract with America, where they said that they were going to give us "the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public’s money." It is time for the government they gave us to "BUTT OUT!!" of our personal lives and learn basic math skills in managing the budget.

Check out my site--www.bk2006.org--and please spread the word to everyone that this is a growing grassroots movement and that we will win in 2006.

Thanks,
Bryan Kennedy

30. With due respect Brian, I believe you need to get with Howard Dean....
He knows exactly how to make this situation into a win. Mandate and require VVPB in the state of Wisconsin...They recently had to force that issue back in the open. True election reform.

Once that's done, use Sensenbrenner's own shameful acts against him. He should never have done this, Dean can point out all his abuses of power and the entire voting record. Boot Sensen from office permanently and get new representation on the Judiciary immediately.

Remember only we the people can hold our reps accountable,

Regards,
Roger

33. Hello, Bryan
Did you know that Bill Clinton's first attempt for elected office was also as a challenger to an entrenched Congressman? And Clinton came ever so close to winning, just like you. Then, CLinton went on to win his next election, and all others but one after that. So here's wishing for your success next time around!

41. Welcome to DU, Bryan. A tip on listing your web site:
http://www.bk2006.org That makes it a link to click on.

I've also snipped 4 paragraphs for DU'ers to read:

My 2006 theme is “Security, Opportunity, Responsibility.” I believe that my moderate viewpoints are a much better fit for our district than the extremist agenda of our current Representative. I am someone who will defend America, fight for greater opportunities for all, and pledge to be responsible and transparent in my representation.

SECURITY—I support a strong military and wise use of it in protecting America. I will demand a foreign policy that seeks greater cooperation with our allies and diplomacy first. I am not afraid to use America’s military might if it is necessary, but why sacrifice the lives of our brothers, sisters and children when other means might accomplish our goals?

OPPORTUNITY—This country was founded on the ideal of creating opportunities for everyone who is willing to work hard and play by the rules. I believe that we should be rewarding hard work and responsibility and opening doors of opportunity for all. Unlike Mr. Sensenbrenner, I believe that work trumps inheritance. We need healthcare reform, trade reform, and to fix the projected Social Security deficit to guarantee that opportunities are created for our children and future generations.

RESPONSIBILITY—Congress is currently operating in an irresponsible manner with secret meetings, lobbyists writing legislation, unethical behavior and fiscal recklessness. Unlike Jim Sensenbrenner, I am committed to reform. I will fight for balanced budgets, transparency, strong morals and ethics, and to create competitive legislative districts.

Rep. Sensenbrenner behaved in an appalling manner yesterday, and as I stated somewhere else on the board, I personally found his actions particularly offensive since my father and my uncle both fought for this country in WWII to protect our republic.

2. Maybe there is hope for the 2006 elections and we can get....
the House and the Senate turned around. Then we wouldn't have to wait until 2008 to make the useless, dangerous bush powerless.

20. The reason I would rather not see impeachment is that it will...
just continue on and on. If a Democrat takes the Whitehouse the republicans will vote to impeach and on and on. I would rather see bush have to resign. The best way is still the VOTE.

6. It will get worse. The housing bubble is beginning it's collapse.
I thought the Republicans would be able to hold off until after the 2006 elections. Here, lots that were selling for $285 000 six months ago are extremely lucky to bring $225 000 today. A lot of real estate on the market, and I can't see much activity other than in posh gated communities.

7. They're Mad, They Just Don't Know Why
I agree...people are far more divided than ever and getting worse. But it's all mis=directed right now. Most of the anger should be drawn at those who are using this division to profit, but instead most of the anger is on sideshow issues (Repugnican strawmen) and between Democrats. All of this is getting uglier and our country suffers the larger this chasm becomes.

However, people aren't hurting enough to put their own interests aside to join with others. We are a very selfish country and many who are suffering will refuse to assess the blame where it belongs, being brainwashed into the strawmen and invisible causes to deflect attention away from where it should be. Listen to these people bitch about the price of oil and yet they still feel they're entitled to it.

I keep seeing a clock stuck in the 1950s and early 60s here. A lot of the sheeple are asleep right now...more interested in Jacko and NASCAR and Desperate Housewives and their SUVs. They haven't had to deal with a dead or crippled loved one from this illegal invasion or connect the growing defecits and profiteering is why their schools had to cut the soccer program or debate team.

Personally, I have no patience for anyone who dares to taut or even defend this regime. Anyone who voted for this cabal knowing fully that Iraq was based on lies is totally immoral in my book...no way around that one.

Cheers!

11. The young people missing limbs are becoming more & more apparent.
The increasing difficulty in making ends meet is becoming more apparent.

The friends and family members' inability to find decent jobs (in this fabulous economy per BushCo) is becoming more apparent.

The elderly and disabled who are in danger of losing subsistence is becoming more apparent.

The trickle-down taxation (increase in property taxes to make up for the breaks to the super wealthy) is becoming more apparent.

People dying due to lack of health care is becoming more apparent.

Corporate abuse and profiteering is becoming more apparent.

Imagine what life will be like a year from now if something doesn't give.

14. People Aren't Connecting The Dots
You abtly describe one or more problems virtually every family in this country faces. However, each faces it internally...that's how were taught to deal with personal issues...and not to relate it to the culture and this regime.

Repgunicans are great at telling their coven that any problems they encounter are their own...or cause by us "libruls". It's never caused by this regime or the conveluted policies and outright greed.

Someone came home shot up from the war? Well it's them damn libruls who let those terrorists in this country in the first place and made those Iraqis fly those planes into the buildings. Don't laugh...people still believe this shit!

Problems with healthcare? Of course it's the libruls who want this welfare state so blacks and illegal Mexicans can get free educations and take the jobs we don't want anyway. :headspin:

Our lovely corporate media doesn't help either as they love to see people fight and find ways to stoke the fires. They see anger as ratings and partisan fighting as a video blood sport to profit from. They're into the profiteering and power games as much as anyone.

Sadly Democrats are busy with their own circular firing squads and haven't found ways to resonate on the facts and important messages that could change the debate in this country and start to make people look at all your fine issues and see the one thing that connects all of those problems: Repugnicans. I keep hoping someone figures this out and soon.

The corporate media, since it has no choice, will just never report it.

But look at the numbers....Public confidence in newspapers/television is at the lowest it has ever been....Ever been, it's down to around 28% just see latest breaking news......

The problem is...There still isn't any of that media so nobody knows the people are in unrest. Then with the new age of media it starts to become clear....since there is radio, blogs, and everything else to start carrying that message.....And now that media message will have to get much larger...

28. I'm Looking For People To Vote With Their Feet Not Their Remotes
Blame the corporate media...and they deserve some, but the disastifaction level is nowhere near what I saw in the 60's or even in the 90's. Many people either are numbed or just don't care. They can bitch to a pollster, but they live in a NIMBY world where they don't give a damn about what's going on as long as they have their bread and circuses.

I see college campuses that are quiet...you couldn't tell there was a war going on or that this was ground zero for where the draft will come from. There was more interest in the NCAAs, Blackberries and where the closest mall is than to any real discontent. I don't see unions working to show some collective muscle and stand up for the rights of workers other than words. There are a lot of signs that show a nation still in deep slumber.

I also would like to point out a series of four articles at Slate entitled "Should you be scared of the Patriot Act?" which give a brief account of the most egregious parts of the Patriot Act.

Even though they were written in 2003, I feel that they are still quite informative:

"A Guide to the Patriot Act, Part 1" http://slate.msn.com/id/2087984

There are links to Parts 2, 3 and 4 at that site.

As far as I can tell, the "people" are fat, happy and clueless.

They moan and grumble about gas prices, but hop back into their oversized SUV, drive home to watch O'Reily, fall back into their stupor after drinking their sugar laden soft drink, chili dog and chips.

It just goes to show, the media can't even report in confidence how low their public approval actually is. Because almost no one is paying attention, but the insane religious fascists. That's how bad television is now.

Barely 28% of all in the U.S. believe little to anything in newspapers or TV nor have any trust in media.

42. I noticed this morning when I was checking my email...
on my excit.com account, the user poll was about Bush's Approval Rating. The question was something to the affect of "do you approve with the job Bush is doing of running the country?" and the options were: a) strongly approve; b) somewhat approve; c) somewhat dissapprove; d) strongly dissapprove; e) I have mixed feelings; f) I don't know.

Out of 6,941 polled 23% strongly approve; 16% somewhat approve; 6% somewhat disapprove; 48% Strongly disapprove; 5% have mixed feelings; and 19% don't know (this always seems to be 19% in their polls by the way.

The thing I find interesting about this poll is that these polls on excite.com always seems to lean to the right... It's a big sign that 48% strongly dissapprove of Bush.

58. You've actually put you finger on the big story in this country right now.
More and more and more people every day are waking up and asking themselves what went wrong. More and more and more people every day are being hit adversely by the economic (duh) policies of the bush**maladministration. But it just doesn't seem that way because the media are still covering up for these buffoons.

Admittedly hardcore brain-dead, self-serving I-got-mine-screw-you republicans will always support this bunch of crooks. But there are fewer and fewer people being fooled every day.

We need to keep pushing, keep the truth about these people coming out every day. Like pResident AWOL said, 'it's hard work'. But the payoff will be worth every bit of it.

It may be old but I saw it for the first time.

It said ' Whose going to clean up after the elephants ?" and there was a picture of an elephant with a big "R" on his back with stars underneath, so there was no mistaking it was a Republican elephant.

I've been to FightingBobFest the last two years and have seen every bumper sticker imaginable but I don't think I've seen this one before.
