Dean strategists involved in helping create left-wing CNN?
Independent World Television will go public on June 15. The goal, as bold as it is big, is to create an alternative news and current affairs network that is, as its name implies, global in reach and free from corporate or government pressures. The network’s success depends on changing the economics of media, with an audacious plan to raise $25 million a year made up of $50 donations from half a million people around the world. Money from business, advertisers and government will be prohibited.

30. With the 50 dollar limit, you can't "buy it out" like CNN.
It would be the great equalizer, at least in theory. Soros would be treated the same as any worker who donated 50 dollars.

4. Wow! So soon?
I wasn't expecting anything like this for another election cycle at best. All I can say is that it's about damn time! Good to see that Dean's people are involved as well.

This puts us one step further ahead towards taking back our media.

11. Looks like broadcasting begins in 2007.
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 10:36 PM by bling bling
Launch Plan

The network is raising a $7 million start-up budget from individual donors and foundations. MacArthur, Ford and Haas foundations have contributed to a planning study. In its next phase, IWTnews will launch its web site and build the online community necessary for the international mass fundraising campaign launching in early 2006. The campaign will use concerts and media events headlined by socially-conscious celebrities to drive the Internet fundraising. If half a million people in the entire world contribute just $50, IWTnews will secure the $25 million it needs to fund its first year of broadcasting, in 2007.

After soooooo long, change appears to be on the horizon. Every day there is a glimmer of good news, Dean, the polls, pukes getting worried about the war etc., now this. I wonder if it will be available on Time-Warner or if that will have to be a campaign in and of itself.

29. It almost resembles socialism in a way (That's NOT bad)
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 12:34 AM by Selatius
It comes closer to socialism than not because people are essentially pooling their resources together voluntarily for the same purpose, and given that the limit is 50 dollars for each individual, that would mean a multi-millionaire who owns a multinational corporation would not have any bigger voice when he donates 50 dollars than any worker who donates 50 as well.

Contrast that with, say, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX News. Those news networks' editorial direction are determined by a small and often elite class of owners. I think we get the point here.

The only question is who determines editorial direction in IWT? Do you get voting power if you donate? Can editors be recalled like delegates?
