PHOENIX (June 16) - A Marine jet carrying four 500-pound bombs crashed into the backyard of a home during a training exercise, but the pilot ejected safely and only one person on the ground was slightly injured, authorities said.

Nearly 1,300 homes were evacuated Wednesday while a military explosives team dismantled the bombs at the crash site in Yuma, about 185 miles southwest of Phoenix. Most people were allowed to return home by late evening.

The Harrier jet was coming in for a landing at Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma when it crashed and burst into flames about a mile from the base, Marine Cpl. Michael Nease said.

''I was just sitting here. It was a low soaring sound. It got real low, it was like a rumbling and I heard an explosion,'' said Marita Jane Wichman, who lives about four houses away from where the crash occurred.

1. Near homes in Phoenix?
No, Yuma is not near Phoenix homes. It is a city of its own almost 200 miles from 'phoenix homes'.

<snip> Nearly 1,300 homes were evacuated Wednesday while a military explosives team dismantled the bombs at the crash site in Yuma, about 185 miles southwest of Phoenix*. Most people were allowed to return home by late evening

*bold face mine to show location of the crash

6. Well, this time, the reporter got it right (hey, it could happen!).
The translation got some static or something.

5. Actually, I am very nice, kind even to people. I just hate it when they
get it wrong and then get defensive about corrections. Nowhere in the story you linked to does it say 'homes near Phoenix'

Actual headline of the story at your link:
Bomb-Laden Military Jet Crashes Near Homes
One Person on Ground Slightly Injured; Pilot Ejects Safely

The ONLY two references to Phoenix:

<snip> PHOENIX* (June 16) - A Marine jet carrying four 500-pound bombs crashed into the backyard of a home during a training exercise, but the pilot ejected safely and only one person on the ground was slightly injured, authorities said.

<snip> Nearly 1,300 homes were evacuated Wednesday while a military explosives team dismantled the bombs at the crash site in Yuma, about 185 miles southwest of Phoenix**. Most people were allowed to return home by late evening.

Bold face mine so you can find the mention of Phoenix

* the location of the AP office filing the report, not site of the event

** gives people not familiar with AZ an idea where Yuma is in relation to a city they may have some knowledge of due to its size

Not picking on you. Just setting the facts out there. There is enough false and misleading reporting done by media without us doing more of it either by honest error (in which case, why get annoyed about being corrected?) or to create some emotional reaction in the readers that the accurate facts might not trigger.

A little error, like saying a plane crashed near an area where it did not crash will get a bunch of people in a tizzy who shouldn't be, like maybe people with family near Phoenix. Why get them upset instead of the people who have loved ones in Yuma and should be concerned about their well being and maybe giving them a call to see if they are ok.

You always so thin skinned about being replied to?

10. Sure, OK, correcting an error is rude. Gotcha
god, what a day you're gonna have if getting things corrected is gonna bother you.

Hope things look up for you. Really I do. See, I make a lot of mistakes. Finally decided to learn from the people who were trying to help me get things right more often. It was much better than whimpering and sulking. As often as I make mistakes, I would be in a constant state of whimper and sulk had I not learned to see the corrections for what they were and stop taking them as personal attacks.

Oh, and if you find me "rude" again, and feel I am out of line, there is an alert button you can use to complain to the mods. I have been here for quite awhile and have yet to have the mods get a complaint about me. Might be fun to get a whoppin.

peace and best wishes

7. where was the "heroic" pilot
who bailed and let his plane crash into a residential neighborhood?

Whatever happened to real heroes who would guide their aircraft away from inhabited areas before bailing out.

11. Think I'll wait till the crash gets investigated before coming down on
pilot. Yeha, those guys usually try to ride it out as long as possible to get the plane to as safe a site as they can, but we don't know what happened yet.

There have been several crashes of that type jet there over the past couple years. Might be some serious problem with the machine.
