The original name of thr Astro's were the Colt 45's. Think about it naming a team after a gun. As my friend said it was never clear if it was named after the gun or the malt liquor and concluded that it was probably both because they go together. That's Texas for you.

Team owner Abe Polin changed the name after Rabin was assasinated. I remember games where whenver a Bullet player scored a basket, the sound effect of a gunshot went off. How sexy, eh?

The name was more of a place holder. They were in the process of building the first domed stadium. They changed the name to the Astros when they played the first exhibition game against the yankees. (2-1 stros :>)
Whats the big deal with the colt 45's anyway. Much better than the pansy Senators.
