Bush to Southern Baptists: "Compassion is defending marriage."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) President Bush praised Southern Baptists for strong family values and again proclaimed his support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in a speech to the faith's annual convention Tuesday.

"Southern Baptists are practicing compassion by defending the family and the sacred institution of marriage," said Bush, who spoke via satellite to about 11,000 Southern Baptists, who responded with a standing ovation.

It's the fourth time the president has addressed leaders of the denomination, which with 16.3 million members and more than 43,000 churches is second in size only to the U.S. Roman Catholic Church.

Bush, whose 20-minute speech came near the beginning of the two-day convention, said marriage is the foundation of society and "it should not be defined by local officials and activist judges. I will continue to nominate judges who faithfully interpret the law and do not legislate from the bench," Bush said.

16. Bill ... You hit the nail right on the head with that!
"Compassion is hatred" -- I like that. That's a perfect Orwellism. It's pretty scary what we're living in these days, huh? :scared:

5. done and done
Ted Vafeas of Muscle Shoals, Ala., said he thought the president's speech was appropriate, especially his remarks about family and marriage.

"I think a man and a woman is what marriage is all about," Vafeas said. "If we neutralize that, we'll have all kinds of trouble."

Since Massachusetts already "neutralized" that, I invite Mr. Vafeas to come here and see all the trouble we're having. :eyes:

6. Does that mean outlawing divorce and criminalizing adultery?
Where is the line drawn in "defending marriage"?

8. This idiot is insane. Or lives in a different reality than me. Which is
the same thing. Why is he not in an institution? Are they going to claim innocent by reason of insanity at his impeachment and trial?

10. These crazy bastards are in my town. 10,000 going door to door.
'Doorstep conversions', I think they call them. My dog is awaiting them. I wish I could see their faces when they drive up Demonbreun street from the convention center and see the Dancin' Penises statues, also known as the Penis D'milo Roundabout.

18. James Dobson is on board with this.
This week, I've heard him tell me how I'm a drunken drugged-up ex-offender who needs a "Good Woman" to "Harness my sexual energy" and turn me froma single male wastrel into a productive member of Society.
And this AM, the Good Doctor tells me that college kids leave home, go to university, and then procede to drink, drug and fuck themselves into a state of ruin.

But......when they get MARRIED...They straighten up and make the Dean's list!

Amazing what "being responsible for another" will do to you...

So being responsible to and for MYSELF isn't ENOUGH?

Excuse me, I gotta go take my blood pressure pills and check my weight and blood sugar now....Oh, not for anyone ELSE, but for ME!
