The latest "Support Our Troops" Meme
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 09:27 PM by alarcoeg
One of the staples of the right is to attempt to denigrate our love of country. They especially love to appeal to emotion by purposely conflating support for Bush's war with support for the men and women unfortunate enough to be fighting it. The rest of the world apparently has no problem distinguishing between the American people and our government (although Bush's re-election caused quite a few to wonder), but apparently Bushco figures there are enough Americans gullible enough to fall for this crap yet again. The latest salvo in this propaganda front will surely be Bush's speech in front of the troops on Tuesday, and General Abizaid helped to set the stage today by saying: We don't need to fight this war looking over our shoulder worrying about the support back home.

What are some effective responses to the "support our troops" line when it is trotted out?

edited to add link for quote.

2. Supporting our troops
means wanting them to get the right equipment the first time, without having to pay for it themselves. Why isn't this administration doing that?

Supporting our troops means taking care of Vets when they get back. Why is the VA on the budget hit-list?

the number one reason I hate George Bush is his ABUSE of our troops.

12. He treats them as if they are a private army that is on loan to him
for whatever he wants to do. If they were his private army, he'd have to worry about properly outfitting them and making sure they had healthcare, etc. But as a loaner, he doesn't have to mess with those pesky details.

9. "You can support the troops without supporting the president."
- Trent Lott.

Always make the distinction between supporting the troops and supporting George Bush the Politician as well as the Republican nonsense that often gets tacked onto bills whose main purpose is to provide for the troops.
