U.S. to resume plutonium 238 production-report
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050627/ts_nm/arms_usa_plutonium_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States plans to produce highly radioactive plutonium 238 for the first time since the Cold War, The New York Times reported on Monday.

The newspaper quoted project managers as saying most, if not all, of the new plutonium was intended for secret missions. The officials would not disclose details, but the newspaper said the plutonium in the past powered espionage devices.

The Times said Timothy Frazier, head of radioisotope power systems at the U.S. Energy Department, vigorously denied in a recent interview any of the classified missions would involve nuclear arms, satellites or weapons in space.

"The real reason we're starting production is for national security," Frazier was quoted as saying.

1. Good Plan, but for a Bad Purpose
If used for energy production, and energy production only, Plutonium 238 could lift the United States out of the post-oil economic armageddon world for centuries, even millennia, until a vast solar grid is established. But the Republicans always have to fuck some part of the world (or all of them) up.

Plus, if its coming from a Republican "..for national security", it is 100 percent unadulterated BULLSHIT. No other euphemistic way of putting it. Plus, what the heck is "national security" to them? Nuclear bombs? Hmm... Cold Wars II? Hmmm... I'm sick and tired of Bush being the President of Sequels: That too, all bad sequels (Gulf Wars II, Oil Shock II, Cold War II, Voodoonomics II, Job Loss II, Depression II, etc...)
