AP: Animal Groups Praise Sen. Rick Santorum

By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer Mon Jun 27, 2:50 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Puppies and kittens likely are not the first things that come to mind when many think of Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) \ the conservative No. 3 Senate Republican known for his tough stance against abortion and gay marriage.

But Santorum, R-Pa., has won high praise from the Humane Society of the United States for pushing legislation aimed at ending breeding facilities known as puppy mills.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals also finds him a friend. "He's a man with a heart, and he doesn't think it's any more acceptable to treat animals cruelly than humans," said Mary Beth Sweetland, director of research and investigations for the Norfolk, Va.-based PETA.

<SNIP>

HAVE THESE PEOPLE LOST THEIR MIND??? Of all the horrible things this man has done, to write a story about and to praise a man because he's a friend to dogs and cats is ridiculous?? Just today he blamed Boston liberals for the Catholic priest abuse scandal -- and the day's not over yet.

This is sick. I love my pets as much as the next guy, but I would feel just as comfortable with Bob Casey -- or just about anyone else than this lunatic.

1. I'd love to see the PETA supporters justify this one.
Just goes to show you that zealots of all kinds have something in common: lunacy.

17. Don't forget that PETA publicly praised
Tim McVeigh for having no meat in his last meal. Said it proved what a good person he was at heart.

2. It's just PR
... work.

You can't ever go wrong being identified with puppies and kittens.

NOW, what you do is hang him with quote about any more acceptable to treat animals cruelly than humans... Pin him down on his views on Gitmo, and use it against him.

We have to turn the tables on each of these little humanizing press ops.

6. That's it. What better way to shore up a political reputation than
to be a champion of puppies and kitties?

3. Methinks
Santorum might be getting a wee bit nervous about the election? I'm moving to Ohio for college but keeping my official residence back home in PA so I can vote him out.

7. A lot of people in that state
including Teresa Heinz Kerry are pulling out the stops to unseat him. I'm sure this is to counter all his negatives.
The best case scenario is to get this much needed legislation through and hope he loses his seat to a Dem anyway.

8. I detest Santorum, but I want to outlaw puppy mills!
I have volunteered for a dog rescue group for several years. I've personally rescued many dogs from shelters, and puppymills. The organization I work with has rescued thousands of dogs both adult, and puppies from puppymills over the last 5-6 years!

I totally support a law that would prevent people from running puppymills forever!

Santorum backing this law sure isn't going to make me support HIM! But he's right on this one!

I just hope some prominent Dems make it pass!!!

20. Same here.
I liv enear Lancaster County, where all the "moral" Amish supplement their income with dog breeding factories.

I want to see them outlawed. Casey is anti-choice, so unless I have a compelling reason not to, I may as well vote for Santorum or just note vote for that office at all:shrug:

10. If he helps end puppy mills, good for him. Though my first thought was
wondering if this had to do with his opposition to man-on-dog sexual assault.

But the point is that the State of Pennsylvania should be able to find ONE other person who can do that, AND who is not a complete jackass. If they can't, we've got big problems.

...Dogs are in fact the 2nd thing that comes to mind when I think about Rick "man-on-dog" Santorum. The first, of course, being santorum.

14. Man-On-Dog a friend of Puppies? Is there a word for Man-on-Dog pedophilia?
Puppy-phelia?

Is Rick Santorum a Puppy-phile?

15. Rick's proven that he's a friend to animals
He's courageously gone on record AGAINST men screwing dogs.

Remember this brilliant quote?

"In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. Thats not to pick on homosexuality. Its not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be. " Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania), in an interview with the Associated Press, April 7, 2003.
