As It Eyes Cities, Wal-Mart Has No Plan B
Run Date: 06/26/05

(WOMENSENEWS)--The political battle over the "morning after pill" is raging, with proposed legislation in 15 states that would protect a pharmacist's right to refuse to fill prescriptionS on "moral" grounds.

Wal-Mart has already laid down its own law. America's largest retailer and one of its largest pharmacies doesn't stock emergency contraception at all.

Emergency contraception, known as Plan B, is 89 percent effective in preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of intercourse, according to its manufacturer, the Women's Capital Corporation, which last year was acquired by Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Woodcliff Lake, N.J. It is even more effective if taken within 24 hours of unprotected intercourse.

"For many rural women, Wal-Mart is their only pharmacy," says Ted Miller, a spokesperson for NARAL Pro-Choice America. "That's what makes Wal-Mart's refusal to carry emergency contraception so disconcerting."

1. As if we needed another reason to hate Wal*Mart....
Wal*Mart's profits will continue to fall because they've saturated this country with crap from China that cost Americans their jobs. People can't even afford Wal*Mart's crap.
Wal*Mart, always fucked up values, always!
I see where one of the Walton family heirs died in an ultra-light aircraft accident yesterday. Too fucking bad. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. All the money in the world can't help him now, although there's some VERY happy heirs of HIS pretending to grieve today. They'll inherit the whole shitty lot (with no "death tax", remember) perpetuating the idle rich community once more.

2. Why is Wal-Mart against contraception???

Well, as events have shown, you can't have enough heirs to the fortune.

4. its a problem when amoral monopolies meddle with moralism
To obtain the monopoly, they play nice, but once entrenched set out on
a course of social engineering. When angry people start shooting
executives of walmart randomly, there will be an awakening. When
the justice system becomes a perverted farce, its a good thing that
the second amendment lets people take walmart on directly.

6. sounds good
This refusing to do your job thing, because you can't hand out
pills that cause the uterine wall to disengage, is all a bit silly.
Then such a person has no business being a pharmacist, and such a
company has no right to have a pharmacy license.

The next step will be soldiers who won't shoot their guns if they don't
agree with the war; taxpayers who won't pay their taxes and a whole
lotta civil disobedience that the republicans are really foolish to
start meddling with... as they'll ultimately be the but end of it all.

Walmart loves govt subsidized health care for its workers. Walmart likes to look for the cheapest deal.
