Could the unocal bid be upping the ante for war? |
|
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,160656,00.html(I know) "But this combines with all these other concerns about China -- currency, trade deficit and other things -- to make another reason for China-bashing, which I'm worried about."
"If CNOOC wins the bidding war, then the government steps in and ultimately turns it down, that's going to be just a horrendous episode in U.S.-China relations," Herberg said.snip China's dramatic emergence has added to long-term troubles, such as the status of Taiwan, over which Beijing claims sovereignty but which Washington supplies with defensive arms.
China's intensifying quest for oil to fuel its surging economy has led Beijing to embrace energy-rich countries the United States shuns, such as Iranand Sudan. If CNOOC does succeed, it would be the biggest overseas acquisition by a Chinese firm.
"They are paying a price for access to (oil) markets which may not be in anybody's interest, like providing the Sudanese and the Libyans with advanced weaponry," said Richard D'Amato, chairman of the U.S.-China Commission, which advises Congress. :scared:  :scared:  :scared:  :scared:

Rather than invade taiwan or do something brash, a bid for an oil company holding huge reserves all around china's borders seems ideal. As much as it appears an american company, the sphere of influence where the reserves are stolen(owned) is from the people of myanmar, thailand and central asia... china's back yard.
So america wants to cut down the trade deficit, then china comes up with a way to spend 18 billions to cut the deficit... fair move. If the bush nazi's play the nationalist card, which surely everyone espects, then the chinese get to show that the american game is a scam and the negative publicity will only hurt the american free traders and make them look like hipocrates. There is no downside for china in this bid. I'm impressed.
