Fla. Teens Charged After Allegedly Burning American Flags
Fla. Teens Charged After Allegedly Burning American Flags

POSTED: 12:11 pm EDT June 28, 2005
UPDATED: 12:14 pm EDT June 28, 2005

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Two Sarasota teens accused of burning six American flags have been charged with arson and manufacturing a firebomb.

Scott A. Baber and Brian A. Richard III, both 18, told deputies they burned the flags because they are anarchists and disagree with the war in Iraq and other U.S. government policies.

They set fire to six flags Sunday and tried to firebomb a car, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.

Richard remained in jail Tuesday on $402,120 bail. Baber was released Monday on $101,120 bail.

2. The flag burning doesn't bother me as much as
trying to firebomb a car. THAT really the issue in the arrest, IMO.

13. May-be the kids didn't try to
"firebomb a car" and the Sheriff made that part up to have the right to charge the kids with a higher crime?

14. Whoah!
A "maybe" doesn't cut it for me. Show me some proof of that and we can work from there. Sorry...That's just way too out there to consider at this point.

16. This happen in a golf course community.
Where are pictures of the so called "tried to firebombed car"? The car should have some kind of damage. Remember this happen in the South.

4. Well if the flags didn't belong to them or they endangered others
that's arson. Firebombing a car? Morons. What kind of protest is that? They give those of us opposed to this illegitimate war a bad name!

5. This really has nothing to do with flag burning per say...
They burned other peoples property including attempting to burn a car. Thats just arson plain and simple. They should have bought their own flags if they wanted to burn one. Idiots will be idiots...

12. Indeed, but I can see RW points peaking through the article
that may be used (anarchists, burning flags, et al). Would be surprised if MSM does not jump on it and start pushing it...

9. Bet their Republican fathers suggested it to them. Remember the faux
flagburing "students" who timed their burnings in cities where GHWBush was scheduled to campaign in 88? That was a DelGuadio brothers set up for the Bush campaign.

11. I'm going to be real cynical and hope that some
investigative reporter there also checks the membership rolls of the local Young Republicans chapter.

17. What exactly is a "firebomb"? and where is the evidence they tried to
burn a car? This doesn't pass my initial smell test.
