I always get a laugh when Christians complain about being "persecuted"
in the US in this day and age.

This is Stephanie, by the way, and not Michael...in case I am posting under his name.

I am in school studying Religion.

Over the years, churches have demonized people of color, ALL other Religions, women, and people who are not heterosexual.

Now, where am I supposed to find sympathy for Christians who are claiming harrassment?

Ridiculous. As far as DU posts about Religion are concerned: this is a political board with the general public involved. Take the religious stuff to the religious forum; and urge your politicians to quit attempting to base public policy on a belief system.

Stephanie

1. I agree, it's laughable
But I don't laugh because these people are dangerous. It isn't funny, it's scary.

2. there you go persecuting people of faith with your statements!
(just kidding - I love it!)

The dialogue does get crazy here - and you are right. Religion in this context should be a discussion of its impact on public policy, not who can hurt who's feelings harder, and especially when we're all theoretically on the same side here.

3. Some won't be happy until they silence all dissent
Labels like "America-hater" "heretic" and "bigot" are just convenient tools to those folks.

Well, they aren't going to silence "dissent" on DU
I understand what you are saying; but think of it this way...

in every single instance throughout history that the churches have promoted civil or personal rights violations it has simply NEVER worked.

History is on the side of progressives.

4. The only "persecution" I ever face as a Christian
Comes just about exclusively from other Christians.

8. Convincing themselves they are 'persecuted like Christ was' is easier
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 12:57 PM by havocmom
than convincing themselves to actually follow the teachings of Christ.

Sort like those yellow ribbons. Easier to slap one on and insist they are supporting the troops than to actually pay attention and demand policy that DOES SUPPORT THE TROOPS.

Sadly, there is too much marketing in America and not enough product.

9. Local commercial
I just saw a commercial for a local Oklahoma Church. The pastor starts off..."it is difficult being a Christian in a non-Christian world..." I had to laugh! I don't think I have EVER seen a commercial for a synagogue or mosque on TV.

It is sad that Christians are sometimes lumped all together, when it is clear their are some who are progressives and others, well, I can't think of a nice name.
