1. The only two things "successful" in Afghanistan
are the pipeline and the poppies.

3. Secret UK troops plan for Afghan crisis
DEFENCE chiefs are planning to rush thousands of British troops to Afghanistan in a bid to stop the country sliding towards civil war, Scotland on Sunday can reveal.

Ministers have been warned they face a "complete strategic failure" of the effort to rebuild Afghanistan and that 5,500 extra troops will be needed within months if the situation continues to deteriorate.

An explosive cocktail of feuding tribal warlords, insurgents, the remnants of the Taliban, and under-performing Afghan institutions has left the fledgling democracy on the verge of disintegration, according to analysts and senior officers.

The looming crisis in Afghanistan is a serious setback for the US-led 'War on Terror' and its bid to promote western democratic values around the world.

Defence analysts say UK forces are already so over-stretched that any operation to restore order in Afghanistan can only succeed if substantial numbers of troops are redeployed from Iraq, itself in the grip of insurgency.

5. thank you Lyn
I might just take you up on that. I have read so much and feel so helpless about my own child. I have told him what to do his whole life and I can't tell him what to do now. I just keep telling him, keep your eyes open, be suspicious of everything, look good at things, don't trust no-one. He has his "back buddy" and they will go everywhere together and watch each other's back. God, I hope that will be enought.... He is in signal corp...

6. I'll be adding good wishes for him to my nightly Star Wishes.
And I mean it, ANY time you need an ear or shoulder or anything else, just email me; we can talk on the phone, or MSN chat, or email or whatever.

Glad he's got a back-buddy; that's saved more than a few lives.

In the winter, yep sure does; hint for ya, find your son SILK longjohns.
They make them for men, very thin and fine, and VERY warm & comfy. Plain white.

I believe Territory Ahead sells them, your local men's undies shop should as well.

7. Lynn, here is an article on Canada sending more troops to
Afghanistan and the change in their mission. It adds to the certainty that Afghanistan, far from a 'success' is heading towards a major failure:

Danger zone

snip

That's when Canada is slated to begin shifting its military operations from Kabul back to the insurgent stronghold of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan.

snip

By February, about 1,250 Canadian troops will be in Kandahar to replace U.S. forces now fighting there.

Roughly 1,000 of these will be combat troops expected to do direct battle against insurgents.

snip

A paper done under the auspices of Canada's foreign affairs department last year says that, in some cases, soldiers with U.S. provincial reconstruction teams wearing civilian clothes and driving unmarked cars passed themselves off as non-governmental aid workers.

12. I supported it while it was, by nature, a 'peacekeeping' mission
I am furious at the change of 'mission', the government is trying to slide this past the Canadian public and, so far, they are succeeding it seems.

:(

Iraq, after my nephew did his tour he came home for a bit and was supposed to get out and all of a sudden he was stop-lossed, he went to Iraq and was there for over a year and now he's finally home. He's an officer and they have been really leaning on them to stay in.
