Listen, I was in a hair salon today, in a real Southern place, and there was a woman sitting there, with dye on her hair, looking real straight and terribly respectable and like that.

So, while I was chatting with someone else, I said - maybe a little loudly - that Cheney's heart can't give out, since I don't think he has one.

And the lady with the dye moved. I thought, Oh, man, here it comes - an ugly political fight in this nice salon.

But, what did she say? "He's gonna get his. It all comes around." And an amazing conversation about this goddamn regime ensued. I was so surprised at the hip and leftie opinions of women I'd have guessed would go in the exact opposite direction. I was ashamed of myself and my stereotyping, honest.

When I left, I went over to the dye lady, who was getting her hair rolled up in BIG rollers, and I touched her shoulder and said, "Never give up," and she put her hand over mine, and said, "Never."

We're all doing the best we can, indeed.
