Americans begin new offensive in Fallujah
By Oliver Poole in Baghdad
(Filed: 11/07/2005)

The US military has launched an operation against insurgents around Fallujah only six months after its officials proclaimed the city "the safest place in Iraq".

The initiative, launched on Thursday but publicised only at the weekend, involved hundreds of marines supported by 100 Iraqi soldiers sweeping through the fertile farmland and villages south of the city.

There is growing concern that the city's pacification has not proved as final as hoped for in November.

Then, the Americans' biggest urban offensive since Vietnam forced out the militia who exported violence from Fallujah to the rest of Iraq.

2. vietnam II
"the city's pacification"

There's a word I haven't heard in a long time --- pacification reminds me of horrible war acts in vietnam.

I have a sick feeling in my stomach

4. Such is the merry-go-round of Iraq.
There are no borders in this fight. Our enemy wears no uniform, fights for no government. Every one we kill spawns more in his place. We are stuck in a revolving door of having to capture and recapture cities and areas from insurgents who just run to fight another day in another city. How can we win this?

7. Killing Iraqis is obviously not working - since we are doing that now
But to win against government lies? I have no idea.
