I have not watched cable news in years, but the other night while putting in a video, saw the broadcasts right after the London bombings. I'm in Australia, so it was evening, and our local station picked up CNN for the coverage.
They were in a frenzy, waiting for the death count. I watched for a while, then watched my video when they started endlessly repeating themselves, then watched the CNN coverage for a while to see what was happening in London.
The reporters were all in a lather, desperately waiting for the police to release the "casualty count". It was all they talked about. You could see palpable disappointment when the death count wasn't nearly as high as they seemed to be hoping it was. Vultures.
They do this crap every time there is a hurricane. I grew up in Louisiana. One year we had SEVEN hurricanes - not huge ones, but big storms. That area of the world is used to fierce weather - occluded weather fronts with severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes. Almost all hurricanes lose strength once they make landfall. Stay off the beaches, evacuate if necessary, batten down the hatches, don't be stupid and go running around outside - you'll be okay in most cases. Simple. Hurricanes are nothing new if you live in Hurricane Alley - and it's sort of like sharks. Don't want to risk being eaten by a shark? Don't go into his living room. Don't want to risk being affected by a hurricane? Don't live in hurricane country.
This is not to deny the damage caused by these storms - it can be horrific, and sometimes all the precautions in the world won't help - like the situation in Florida last summer. That was out of the ordinary. Usually, people can deal with a hurricane and get back to normal within a reasonable amount of time.
Ever notice that news reporters can't just say a hurricane has made landfall, or has crossed an area? It has to SLAM into the area! Places are BATTERED by the FURY of a hurricane. According to news channels like CNN, hurricanes have WRATH and WREAK HAVOC.
And they're so, so disappointed if there aren't plenty of bodies and heartbroken survivors of dead people to go and point their damn cameras at.
If I see CNN on my local station again, I'll just turn the damn tube off.
