put up one radical religious judge to shut those religious right that are up in arms thinking that he isn't doing enough for them.. and a corporate whore to shut up the conservative that are saying he isn't conservative enough.. ugh.. what did we do in our past lives to keep getting screwed over and over again from this guy???

Rehnquist is already their poster boy. Short of putting Santorum himself on the bench, I don't think it gets all that much worse.
Though, to address your concern, neither side will be happy unless they are BOTH exactly what they want. They always play an all or nothing game.

in fact I'm a little bit complacent about the replacement that Dubya may pick for Rehnquist. Why?
Well, let's face it, there aren't too many farther right on the political scale than Rehnquist (except Scalia of course) so the replacement would be only EQUALLY right-wing wacko...
and...
in the end, the balance doesn't change. Rehnquist was one of the strong conservative block and that will remain a strong conservative block.
On the other hand,
If he replaces O'Connoner with a right-wing wacko, the balance will be upset and we'll have to live with a conservative court for almost a full generation.
