24. Funny how incredibly important this nomination was just a few weeks ago!!! |
|
I really think the supreme court nomination is, in reality, more important than Rove's stuff - which will not stop since he is going to be indicted at some point. I think it's funny how we can only discuss one issue here, or can we? I've already pointed out that this is a distraction http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4133237&mesg_id=4133237 - it doesn't meant that it's not important though!

We can't afford to let any more ultra right wing ideologues onto the court. Not only is Roe v. Wade in danger, we could also see nearly every government program and civil rights law, going back to the New Deal, become endangered through an ultraconservative interpretations of the Constitution.

I'm not knocking your passion (am frankly quite grateful for it). However, now is the time to unite in important common causes which are clearly imperative to our future.
Ridding ourselves of this tyranny is on the top of the list (please, believe me on that,...after all, if they remain in power they will nominate more than one justice). Plummeting a profiteering media that no longer values the interests of our people is another biggie.

Its decisons have the longest lasting effect on all of us. So a court which becomes extreme one way or the other is a total disaster. Being an attorney also makes it important to me on a professional level as well, but for me its mostly the long lasting effects good or ill that the court can have on our lives.

Nothing. The establisment media in the country is not about to let anything serious happen to Bush. The best we get out of this politically is Rove 'steps down'. Whether Fitzgerald ushers him into a 9x12 or not, isn't going to stop these monsters.

Karl Rove. He's been the whore that hides his pimp.
Instead of trafficking sex, these pimps traffic humanity: manipulate them and abuse their lives for their profit.
Karl Rove is just an expensive HO riding the tide of his tyrannical pimps. He helped them recruit and was generously rewarded.

Make the media continue covering Treasongate. 'It's hard work' but it'll be worth it. If they start to do all SCOTUS all the time, and ignore the other story, we should scream really loud in our letters and over the phone.

If this tyrannical administration is left in place, our civil liberties will be suspended and disappeared.
If this tyrannical administration is left in place, this country's advances over an entire century will be buried.
If this tyrannical administration is left in place, the interests of a powermongering few will be forced upon the many.
If this tyrannical administration is left in place, we may be guilty of allowing a fraud against our people to give their lives and treasure to global fascists who profit and exploit human weakness.
If this tyrannical administration is left in place,...the rest of the world will seek to destroy us and they WILL destroy us because we are merely 2% of the world's population. No matter the superior weapons, we will fall.

but the fact remains that terrible administrations come and then they go. Now this one is terrible, maybe the worst in the history of the nation, but their their ability to fuck things up is limited by time and by some measure of checks and balances in the political system. I would certainly maintain that in the "big picture" the rulings of the Supreme Court in upholding (or diminishing) the Bill of Right and other Constitutional protections have far more impact not only on our daily lives but on the very nature of our society than anything Karl Rove might do. If you are saying that the Rove matter is going to get Bush impeached, therefore we can ignore this nomination and focus only on Rove, I would call that wishful thinking personally.

Traitorgate is a legal proceeding about which there is 'nothing we can do about it'. It is not subject to public opinion.
A Supreme Court appointment is a political action which is somewhat dependent upon public opinion.
I think we should push both issues as hard as possible, but politics isn't going to affect Fitzgerald and the grand jury. It might affect a Supreme Court candidate.
