Media not reporting CIA open letter to Congress - SEND TO YOUR LOCAL PAPER
Send it TODAY. And also to any national show, like Inside Politics, Olbermann and Hardball. This way they know we're watching for bias and interested in this aspect of the case.

CIA Agents Letter to US Senate and House

18 July 2005

AN OPEN STATEMENT TO THE LEADERS OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SENATE.

The Honorable Dennis Hastert, Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives
The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader, U.S. House of Representatives
The Honorable Dr. William Frist, Majority Leader of the Senate
The Honorable Harry Reid, Minority Leader of the Senate

We, the undersigned former U.S. intelligence officers are concerned with the tone and substance of the public debate over the ongoing Department of Justice investigation into who leaked the name of Valerie Plame, wife of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson IV, to syndicated columnist Robert Novak and other members of the media, which exposed her status as an undercover CIA officer. The disclosure of Ms. Plame's name was a shameful event in American history and, in our professional judgment, may have damaged U.S. national security and poses a threat to the ability of U.S. intelligence gathering using human sources. Any breach of the code of confidentiality and cover weakens the overall fabric of intelligence, and, directly or indirectly, jeopardizes the work and safety of intelligence workers and their sources.

The Republican National Committee has circulated talking points to supporters to use as part of a coordinated strategy to discredit Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife. As part of this campaign a common theme is the idea that Ambassador Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame was not undercover and deserved no protection. The following are four recent examples of this "talking point":

Michael Medved stated on Larry King Live on July 12, 2005, "And let's be honest about this. Mrs. Plame, Mrs. Wilson, had a desk job at Langley. She went back and forth every single day."

Victoria Toensing stated on a Fox News program with John Gibson on July 12, 2005 that, "Well, they weren't taking affirmative measures to protect that identity. They gave her a desk job in Langley. You don't really have somebody deep undercover going back and forth to Langley, where people can see them."

Ed Rodgers, Washington Lobbyist and former Republican official, said on July 13, 2005 on the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, "And also I think it is now a matter of established fact that Mrs. Plame was not a protected covert agent, and I don't think there's any meaningful investigation about that."

House majority whip Roy Blunt (R, Mo), on Face the Nation, July 17, 2005, "It certainly wouldn't be the first time that the CIA might have been overzealous in sort of maintaining the kind of top-secret definition on things longer than they needed to. You know, this was a job that the ambassador's wife had that she went to every day. It was a desk job. I think many people in Washington understood that her employment was at the CIA, and she went to that office every day."

These comments reveal an astonishing ignorance of the intelligence community and the role of cover. The fact is that there are thousands of U.S. intelligence officers who "work at a desk" in the Washington, D.C. area every day who are undercover. Some have official cover, and some have non-official cover. Both classes of cover must and should be protected.

While we are pleased that the U.S. Department of Justice is conducting an investigation and that the U.S. Attorney General has recused himself, we believe that the partisan attacks against Valerie Plame are sending a deeply discouraging message to the men and women who have agreed to work undercover for their nation's security.

We are not lawyers and are not qualified to determine whether the leakers technically violated the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act. However, we are confident that Valerie Plame was working in a cover status and that our nation's leaders, regardless of political party, have a duty to protect all intelligence officers. We believe it is appropriate for the President to move proactively to dismiss from office or administratively punish any official who participated in any way in revealing Valerie Plame's status. Such an act by the President would send an unambiguous message that leaks of this nature will not be tolerated and would be consistent with his duties as the Commander-in-Chief.

We also believe it is important that Congress speak with one non-partisan voice on this issue. Intelligence officers should not be used as political footballs. In the case of Valerie Plame, she still works for the CIA and is not in a position to publicly defend her reputation and honor. We stand in her stead and ask that Republicans and Democrats honor her service to her country and stop the campaign of disparagement and innuendo aimed at discrediting Mrs. Wilson and her husband.

Our friends and colleagues have difficult jobs gathering the intelligence, which helps, for example, to prevent terrorist attacks against Americans at home and abroad. They sometimes face great personal risk and must spend long hours away from family and friends. They serve because they love this country and are committed to protecting it from threats from abroad and to defending the principles of liberty and freedom. They do not expect public acknowledgement for their work, but they do expect and deserve their government's protection of their covert status.

For the good of our country, we ask you to please stand up for every man and woman who works for the U.S. intelligence community and help protect their ability to live their cover.

Sincerely yours,
Larry C. Johnson, former Analyst, CIA

11 Former Intelligence Officers Speak Up on Behalf of Protecting Valerie Plame's Identity

WASHINGTON (AP) - Eleven former intelligence officers are speaking up on behalf of CIA officer Valerie Plame, saying leaking her identity may have damaged national security and threatens the ability of U.S. intelligence gathering.

In a statement to congressional leaders, the former officers said the Republican National Committee has circulated talking points focusing on the idea that Plame was not working undercover and deserved no protection.

There are thousands of U.S. intelligence officers who work at a desk in the Washington, D.C., area every day who are undercover as Plame was when her identity was leaked, the 11 former officers said in a three-page statement.

The former officers' statement comes amid revelations that top presidential aide Karl Rove was involved in leaking Plame's identity to columnist Robert Novak and Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, and that Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis Libby, also was a source for Cooper on the Plame story.

4. Are you kidding me?
My local media hasn't reported on ROVE at ALL, except for two small articles spread out over three days and those were the RW talking points that somehow those e-mails he had sent "exonerated" him. What I get for living in a Repug state I guess.

I decided to forward to ABC, CBS and NBC. I would suggest we hit hard on these and the major cable networks.

Also, is anyone doing a drive on the DSM/Traitorgate/9-11 events this weekend? I'd like to work on getting that information out, too.

20. One of the things that most makes me want to cry is not the deaths
and the horror that this regime has inflicted--maybe that is just too much to take in--and not the meanness of pushing medical costs through the roof, depriving the elderly, and plans to loot Social Security, to throw the elderly into the streets, or any of these obviously wicked, criminal, low-minded, thieving, stick-it-to-the-poor policies. What gets me into a state, and brings tears to my eyes, is the breaches of faith.

Young soldiers--brave, idealistic young people, with patriotism and service to country in their hearts--being used as cannon fodder for oil wars, and the older men sending them to their possible deaths having nothing in their hearts. Nothing. Greed. Power.

Elderly black people standing out in the rain in ten hour lines to vote--and believing that they can make a difference.

Young people voting in droves--believing they could make a difference--and finding their college precincts shorted on voting machines. What a terrible assault on the future!

People caught in the military vise, who choose to stand on their principles--people who have refused to torture, or have whistleblown on torture--because it violates their ethical sense and the laws they were taught to respect. The Geneva Conventions, sacred to all soldiers.

Military people who have refused to participate in this unjust war--and who have had to flee the country or are in prison--believing in justice, and lawfulness and fairness.

Our old allies--the French, the Germans, the Canadians, and the people if not the leaders of England--who count on us to help uphold international law; and the people or countries all over the world who are turning toward peace, justice and democracy, sometimes having learned those values from us (or from our ideals).

And the Iraqis--many of them--who wanted liberation--and instead got massive theft by the Bush Cartel, and Bush-funded death squads, and torture, and mayhem.

And the Israelis and Palestinians--most of them, I'm sure--who want peace, and had looked to us to help them achieve it.

And the people who have worked for a company all their lives, only to see the company corporatized, and their jobs shipped elsewhere, and their pensions looted, and their communities destroyed.

And all the millions of people who have paid into Social Security, every week, all their lives, who may face no return, due to looting and mismanagement and unjust war.

And all the honest taxpayers--the poor and middle class--who have dutifully paid for everything (schools, hospitals, roads, libraries, airports, fire protection, police, parks, environmental protection, food safety, clean water, gov't salaries and pensions, national security, the military) to find Bush buddies at Enron just outright stealing $9 billion from the state of California, or as much by Halliburton, Bechtel and Co. every month from the U.S. treasury, ad infinitum.

All the small businesses who have played by the rules, and treated their workers well, and contributed to their communities--only to find bigger and bigger corporations and global conglomerates getting more and more tax breaks and preferences, and gobbling up small concerns, and destroying community values, and abandoning communties and the country--with this predation endorsed and promoted by their own government.

All these broken hearts, broken faiths, betrayals. It is so sad. All this belief, loyalty, hope and courage, and faith in government--abused, disregarded, despised. What an outrage!

Out of this fire may come a better country, as people discover for the first time what they really believe in, and learn to fight for it, and as they redisover our country's founding principles: that all men are created equal, and that all governments require a "balance of power" to prevent tyranny.

We may do something about private, rightwing interests owning and controlling our election system; and about Corporate Rule and their news monopolies; we may achieve a better balance between social needs and trade. We may learn from it. Many already are.

But--as with these CIA officers--it is wrenching to see their commitment and loyalty and courage spat upon and ignored.

Their desire for non-partisan support in their dangerous work on our behalf touched me in particular, because I know that such support will not be forthcoming from these Bush "pod people" in Congress--a wretched lot of toadies and yes-men, many of whom hold office illegitimately, and who care for nothing except money and power.

How paltry they are--what empty men!--compared to those who are pleading with them for moral support in the line of duty--for some minimal protection of their lives!

A fascist coup like this Bush Cartel could break a country. It could disrupt loyalty and commitment forever more, and tear up the fabric of our common identity as a nation. I don't think it is. And I don't think it will. I have a lot of faith in the American people, and I know that the things that truly move us--our love of justice, our desire for good government, our democratic ideals, our generosity, and our love for solving practical problems (like the non-transparency in electronic voting)--will win out, in the end.

Have faith, my friends--in each other, and in human progress. We are the majority.

BAD NEWS: Probably too late for most of their client newspapers. The bigger ones may add it late, but the smaller and midsize papers tend to have way smaller staffs at night.

Memo Is Key To Plame Identity Case
Government Officials Say Classified Information On CIA Officer Was Marked `Secret'
July 21, 2005
By WALTER PINCUS And JIM VANDEHEI, Washington Post

WASHINGTON -- A classified State Department memorandum central to a federal leak investigation contained information about CIA officer Valerie Plame in a paragraph marked "(S)" for secret, according to current and former government officials.

That designation is a clear indication that any Bush administration official who read it should have been aware the information was classified, sources said.

Plame - who is referred to by her married name, Valerie Wilson, in the memo - is mentioned in the second paragraph of the three-page document, which was written on June 10, 2003, by an analyst in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, according to a source who described the memo to The Washington Post.

The paragraph identifying her as the wife of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV was clearly marked to show that it contained classified material at the "secret" level, two sources said. The CIA classifies as "secret" the names of officers whose identities are covert, according to former senior agency officials.
