Something just plain weird going on
I've been in touch with a truck driver friend. He told me he dropped his regular trailer at the company's terminal in CA, and bobtailed to a huge abandoned military base in Texas. He was given a non-descript white trailer.

There are now 300 trucks from his company, as well as hundreds from others. They're locked in on the grounds, and more trucks are arriving all the time. He's been sitting since early Saturday. They've been told they aren't allowed out of their trucks for more than twenty minutes, and there is a gubmint "roach coach" that comes by at mealtimes.

He said last night, a bunch of buses came in to take the drivers to a truckstop two hours away, where they all got free showers. He has no idea what they'll be hauling, or how long he'll be sitting there.

Any ideas?

19. Wouldn't the military have the vehicles to do that sort of move themselves
I mean, do they need to contract that work out and even if they did, why would they keep the drivers hostage in their trucks and bus them out for showers?

24. Actually, I don't think they do have enough trucks to do that.
The military does a lot of contracting to move all kinds of things all the time.

I can imagin, if it does involve a base closing, they would be trying to keep it quiet, to the locals at least, for as long as they can.

I have no explaination for why you would keep the drivers isolated though. I'll be following this story to see just where it leads.

I can't even imagine what else they could possible be doing.

17. I take it that this is way out of the ordinary for him and for this
company to do this type of hauling for the government? Sounds like they are being held hostage in their trucks. If they are at a military base, why did they have to be bused two hours to get a shower? And, who was watching their trucks (that they can't be outside of for more than 20 minutes) while they were driving all that way for a shower? Most truckstops don't have 300 stalls for truckers to shower in, so that process would have taken some time as well.

Wonder if they will be hauling waste to Nevada? If they are, they should be told what they are carrying, don't you think? Truckers aren't supposed to move a wheel without knowing what their load is, at least on paper, should there be an accident along the way.

I would be interested in hearing where he eventually drives his truck and if the other trucks go to the same location. Very odd indeed.

Keeping anyone against their will is kidnapping. Unless the truckers are getting paid and are there willingly, this would be illegal. The Busies might be kidnapping retarded kids to "induct" them into the Army but as a former trucker myself, that's not going to happen to a bunch of truckers, regardless of their politics.

80. "Locked in", "aren't allowed out of their trucks": pure bullshit.
Quote from the original (and only) post from this thread-starter:

"They're locked in on the grounds, and more trucks are arriving all the time. He's been sitting since early Saturday. They've been told they aren't allowed out of their trucks for more than twenty minutes, ...."

I think this is pure bullshit. But it's obviously entertaining many DUers today. I've got to get back to work. Let me know when/if this tale turns into something tangible.

even for my tinfoil hat.
To start with, most bases (even abandoned) are near to towns. Why would they have to drive two hours to shower and why a truck stop?
Why not put these guys up in hotels since it is indefinite?
The other thing...these truckers are paid by the mile, so I highly doubt you would have that many people sitting there for 4 days without a load to haul--they wouldn't be getting paid.
Like I said--I can't even think of a "huge" abandoned military base in Texas--at least not yet anyway.

...running out the door at the moment.

He's been calling me by cell phone. The base is long ago abandoned. The truckstop two hours away is near Weatherford (just outside Ft.Worth).

When he called the other night the drivers were surmising that they were preparing just in case the hurricane hit Texas. I told him there was no way they would be going to those lengths before a hurricane. Anyway, it didn't happen, and the operation continues.

Oh yeah...he said he's being paid $200 per day to sit there.

If he's talking to you on a cell phone, it's hardly as if they are sequestered there. If they are suspicious about why they are there, you'd think SOMEONE of those "hundreds" would have leaked the fact that they are all there.

If it is, ask him to drive like six inches to get an idea how heavy the trailer is.

300 drivers * $200/day * 4 days is $24 million$240,000 spent so far, without doing anything. I'm having trouble believing that.

With the predominance of satellite-based tracking systems for most carriers, the concentration of trucks in an unusual area would be easy to demonstrate to a reporter.

At least one of the carriers stuck and unable to meet other shipping commitments would go to the media and show the proof.

Sites such as shut military bases and other federally owned lands would be more cost-effective as temporary nuclear waste sites than privately owned parcels since they are federally owned and have security systems in place, the report said. It did not recommend any bases by name or location, or indicate a preference between bases that have been closed and those facing closure.

I guess it is very possible that they are hauling nuclear waste out of one of the bases that may have been used as an interim site.
Perhaps they will be shuttling this stuff from base to base so that people won't catch on to what is going on.

On edit:
I am sure there would be provisions under the Patriot Act that would exclude the truckers from knowing what was being hauled. A case could be made that national security could be breached with the hijacking of one or more of these trucks.
The presence of nuclear waste would be an indicator of why they wouldn't want these guys exposed to the environment for too long of periods of time. The length of time could also be to ascertain that security wasn't breached. Who knows? With our secretive government, anything could be going on.

53. that was my first thought -- but i'm wondering --
isn't there supposed to be some kind of special equipment to transport hazmats? maybe just in the container part of the truck. ???

63. It's very possible
That they are enclosed in some sort of concrete bunker or something similar that are loaded directly on the truck and remain self-encapsulated.

51. How have they been in touch with you?
I would think they'd block cell phones if they are attempting to keep people from speaking to the outside?

57. don't know what to make of this, or even if it's true . . . BUT . . .
given what I know about BushCo, I won't dismiss it . . . they have proven that they are capable of ANYTHING, and if an operation of this scale is actually underway, I'd just as soon know about it before rather than after whatever it is they're planning . . . I hope someone down Texas way can do some digging and find out if there's anything to the story . . .

66. Truckers are a tough bunch
I cannot see how they would stand for being holed up and potentially suspicious goods. They would surely take over the bus or turn over the truckstop. I know that I would not want to ship nuke waste without knowledge or any other toxic substance for that matter.
They would all have to be neocons to stand for this or mind controlled. Maybe the poster's friend had on his :tinfoilhat: when he entered the base.

77. A WORD OF CAUTION TO NAYSAYERS
A while back in GD a person posted that her minister kicked Democrats and people who voted for Kerry out of her church. She was not only treated with skepticism (which can be healthy)..she was mocked...except her story turned out to be true and made it to the news even though it was posted on DU first. Just sayin'.

89. Good point... However, this was posted this morning, and only 1 further...
post from the OP. And nothing from the OP in response to anyone's posts to him/her. If I had information about something like this, I'd sure as heck try to answer a few questions after I posted it. Especially since it sounds a little suspicious on the surface. This trucker called him/her on a cell phone? And yet they are not allowed to leave their trucks.

There's just too much that could be answered, and the longer no answers are given the more it seems like a setup.

I'll concede that the OP shouldn't be mocked. But I am curious about what the answers to all these questions would be... (earworm alert... now I have Mahogany going through my head :)).

There has still been no response from "dragndust" since the original post. My guess is that she is laughing her ass off at her home computer.

I think this whole thing is pure nonsense, but it does appear to be keeping many DUers out of trouble speculating on this thread. Me, I've got grass to cut and VVPB to lobby for here in the Orange State. If anything tangible comes from this tale, let me know.

90. You're right -- one more cryptic post.
If the friend called on a cellphone, she can cetainly call him/her back. I still think this is a DU dalliance, but then again, I wish I were on drugs (soft, green ones) myself.

92. I just got back home and...
saw what this thread had turned into. I called my boyfriend, and he said it is the Federal Center in Fort Worth. He clarified that it is not "abandoned". It "appears" to be an abandoned base that's being used for something else.

I asked him why they would have to be bussed out of Fort Worth to Weatherford for showers, and he has no explanation. I'm sure there is someplace in Fort Worth they could have taken them.

He says there are FEMA people there now. Would they mobilize all those people/trucks ahead of time for Hurricane Emily?

93. If this was about Hurricane Emily, the feds would just say so.
Why don't you call the Ft. Worth media and tell them your story? Maybe they can move this whole apocryphal tale to a more reality-based plane.

87. nuke weapons are transported on unmarked trucks.
saw a documentary about it. many of the drivers who drive these very specialized rigs are former special forces and police. the drivers make a little more money than normal, but not much.

the trucks looked normal but were equipped with tracking and security features that weren't standard when the documentary was made (one of the first gps tracking systems was used).

i don't know why they would need 300 trucks. i also know that a lot of truck drivers get lonely on the road and they tend to tell really good stories, true or otherwise.
