I'm actually kind of happy Bush appointed Roberts instead of... |
|
some wingnut minority. Which is what many were expecting.
No doubt they could've went and dug up a Clarence Thomas clone or some wingnut black female like that Rogers Brown lady. Then we'd hear nothing but the talking points that the Democrats can't oppose anyone who is a minority and if they do then they must be racist or some stupid garbage like that.
They did it for Gonzalez, they did it for Rice. They did it for the first judge filibustered, a wingnut Hispanic. We'd hear nothing about the nominee's credentials and instead would only hear about their race or gender, as if this somehow nullifies everything else.
Roberts is much easier to attack, and we don't have to listen to extremely annoying and asinine right wing talking points.

He doesn't have a lot of published opinions so nobody officially knows where he stands (except for Roberts, Bush, and Rove). That being the case, the Dems will have a LOT less ammo to fight his nomination than they would a well-known wingnut.

He does not have enough opinions for us to be able to tell what kind of justice he would be.
I see too many rush judgements here about this fellow. I can bet that he is a radical right winger and for that reason alone his appointment should be fought as hard as it can be. The last thing we need is another radical right winger on the court.

3. i honestly think he expects to lose this one |
|
and better position himself to win the next one, meanwhile appealing to his base (fundraising) and taking rove off the headlines.
seriously, a white male EXPLICITLY for reversing roe v wade??
he'll lose easily, then propose someone who IS a minority and/or woman and who is 'merely controversial'. then, it will be much more difficult for the senate to reject a SECOND nominee.

6. As much as I'd like to believe it |
|
I can't see it happening. That won't keep me from doing everything I can to let the media and my gov't officials know that he is a bad choice.
He got 4 dem votes for his appeals court position. Feinstein of course was one... Kohl was another (:wtf:) but Lieberman wasn't one of them. I read today he liked the choice. They need 5 Dems to beat any fillibuster. Wisconsin residents need to flood Kohl with calls and letters.
Of course Feinstein and Leibermen are lost causes

But bushco ain't normal, I think they are going for a twofer: controversial guy to distract AND payoff a loyal minion.
