Debunking the all liberals are poor myth |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 10:49 AM by greenbriar
When I peruse other boards that devote pages to making fun of Democrats, I am constantly amazed that they paint everyone with the same little brush stroke...
Myth: all liberals are poor, broke and living off of welfare
Truth: Democrats come in all sizes, shapes and incomes.
Lets see how they paint this:
I am a Democrat. Have been since 1985 I am not poor. Usable income is over $100,000 a year I have a job. Have had the same one for the last 10 years so has my spouse
I am a christian. I go to church. A baptist church and I believe Jesus would have been a Democrat.
I have a daughter going to college I plan to have her pay some of her college herself to establish financial responsibility in 3 years.
My mother who thinks Bush is a godly man (why he even took time off the campaign trail to lead someone to the lord don't ya know) lives off of my deceased DEMOCRAT father's social security and complains that she never has enough money. After giving her crap about how Alfred E NEwman cares sooooo much for society..hehe..I usually have to give her money to fix her car or buy her grocries ect.
I am tired of the stereo type we are accused of all the time.
to all neocons...sit and spin.
YOU ONLY WISH YOU HAD IT THIS GOOD

you an elite librul. I think it's the racist part of the conservative wing. They are upset that blacks are getting welfare, at least that's their perception.
Because we all know that only blacks commit crimes and have babies just for the extra welfare check.:sarcasm:

6. Right wing stereotypes of Liberals don't bother me |
|
It's not like there is anything wrong with being poor. It doesn't make you a bad person. To think it does one would have to buy into the stereotypes about poor people. Which is just plain stupid.
It's not like there's anything wrong or bad about not being Christian. Again, to think so means a person buys into the stereotypes about non-Christians. Once again, that's just plain stupid.

11. You have to keep in mind their stereotypes (of liberals) are largely based |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 10:50 AM by Solly Mack
based on their racist and sexist thinking...as well as their thinking on "class structure"
Naturally, the root causes of all 3 are fear and ignorance...but they aren't attacking Liberals, per se, so much, as they are attacking the various groups that make up Liberals. And attacking them based on stereotypes (hate, fear, racism, bigotry)
It's just another extension of their racism, sexism and classcism...now while them saying things like "Liberals are all poor" doesn't bother me....the root...the cause...the motive behind it....does bother me. Because the underlying thinking is steeped in stereotypes of the poor - I know they are attacking the poor more than they are attacking my politics.
If that makes sense.

22. They can't think - that is part of the problem |
|
They have been told "this is what a librul is" and because they were told by some con that they believe, it must be true. No need to verify it for themselves.
My determination is that one of the primary differences between the cons. and the liberals is the thought process. Proof is Nov 2, 2004, Anyone who actually would have thought about who they were voting for could not have marked the box for bu$h.
The only two reasons the repukes can ever win an election without stealing it are that Liberals Think and the the cons don't. They can sell any crap to the ones who don't think and anyone else that votes for repukes would do so because they thought through the reasons, the candidate is better on the issues important to them or the Senator has been in office for a long time and that is valuable for a state...

8. Another myth breaker here, all liberals live in cities |
|
I have a twenty acre farm/orchard in rural Missouri.
I make a tad over 60,000 at my day job
With Social Security going into the toilet in the next twenty years(hopefully not), I plan to live on my investment money and proceeds from my farm/orchard.
Not a christian, but have been known to attend church on occaission. Raised under two faiths, Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist. Was baptized twice in my life. Guess that makes me either a Roman Baptist or a Southern Catholic. Guess you can see why I gave up organized religion when I was twelve.
I have no children
I give lots of time/money to various charities and political causes
And I love the life I'm living. I went through hell and back when I was younger, and clawed my way here. Stubborn, determined, self made man. And liberal as hell:evilgrin:

10. I'm not poor and I'm a liberal |
|
I'm not rich, mind you, but I own a house and manage to pay my bills, and currently am managing a car payment. I make about $45,000 a year. I wish I made more, but I do well enough. I also have a pension, medical, dental, and vision insurance and will maintain them for free when I retire (the standard UAW deal).
Granted, this is not protection enough for old age and all that, but it's a start. I have a 401k, in addition to the pension.

I'm a dem. Always have been. Gotten MORE liberal as i've gotten older. I've been making in excess of 6 figures for 13 years. I'm 48. Never been
So, i'm sick but don't collect anything from the dole and make more than 99.9+% of the idiot freepers. If they have any questions, they can quit their cowardly lurking and ask me man to man. But, that won't happen, since they're all too afraid. The Professor

and it is usually the culprit for infighting here as well as the other side. Unfortunately, it is often labeled one of the other "isms" as far as I can tell.
The repubs were smart by using religion and other movements as their base since it encompasses all classes. Gun advocacy, libertarian talking points and religious rhetoric brought them to power. Since the neo-cons were previously liberals they knew what switches to hit. They even put forward the coulters, malkins, bruces and charons to give a feminist flavor to grab the female vote which is historically majorly Democrat.
Funding for conservative candidates comes from surrendered tithes from the pews in exchange for "faith based initiatives" to the churches that advocate their members donate to the repubs.
sorry, started rambling...

I think classism is highly destructive and way too common. I see it every single day.
But labelling people or making them ashamed is counterproductive.
Finger people as classists? No.
Point out instances of classism? Yes.

It is etc. for etcetera, former lead singer of the band Shytown not ect. for ectoplasm.
Actually, that is where you may lose the Reagan democrats. You have elitist rich Democrats and poor welfare Democrats, neither of whom really cares about the working class. The stereotype is that these rich liberals care more about welfare than they do about the working class.
Two cases in point - the prominence of social issues over economic ones. At least in the media, gay rights and abortion rights get most of the press. Working class males are expected to jump into these battles or are disparaged as bigots for not doing so. Second is the Dean comment about White Christians. Dean seemed to be putting minority issues on the front burner. Again, what about working class issues regardless of race?

been told- and why i never thought i 'fit'- cause i'm anything but 'rich' in material goods-
The thing i came to wonder about, and still marvel at, is how the 'elite' don't seem to worship their money and hoard it away the way the republicans do...... If the democrats are (or were) financially 'better off' than repubs, why don't THEY hoard, and complain about 'spending' on the good of the 'less thans'?
odd- and very revealing.

Now it supposedly means "snobbish", "out-of-touch" and "oblivious".
The RW is even fundamentally changing the meaning of words, so they can collectively call us alternately dirt-poor hicks, then rich narcissists without even a hint of hypocrisy.

Way more! I own my own business and several properties. I have my own health insurance and have employees who rely on my business for their livelihood. I've been a liberal since college and I have never been on welfare, defaulted on a loan, or received government assistance of any kind. I worked my way through college and have never stopped working. All this despite being diagnosed with a potentially debilitating disease 5 years ago.
I have a nice car, well two of them actually, which still have my Kerry bumper stickers on them (partly to help dispell that stereotype myth). I love passing a beat up old, piece of crap, on-its-last-legs pickup truck with a "W" sticker on it. It gives me great pleasure. :-)

you can take them off when you aren't sure of the area. I live in a red state and I take mine off when I get my cars serviced etc (both cost over 30K). It's a shame they are so jealous that they would do that to your nice new car.

The Rush Limbaugh spin has always been that liberals are "Rich, Northeastern and West Coast elites who control the media and use it to brainwash the poor to give them power."
Most Republicans I know think that they are a middle class and poor party now. It's a weird thing that's happened over the last 25 years.
