So I got this thing in the mail...
inviting me to Schulers to hear this author speak about his book.

Get this: The title is called "Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith. The author name is Rob Bell and he's locally from here.

Anyways the ad reads on the front:

Rob Bell at Schulers Books & Music August 2

Every Generation Must Ask: What Does It Mean To Be A Christian Here And Now?

Rob Bell is the founder pastor of Mars Hill, one of the fastest growing churches in American history (Oh yeah? How come I've never heard of it?. He is also featured in the first series of spiritual short films called NOOMA. Rob and his wife, Kristen, have two boys and live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The back reads as:
Meet Rob Bell author of "Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith. Hear Rob spak, view the premiere of NOOMA 011/Rythym, participate in Q&A, enjoy the free refreshments, and get your copy of "Velvet Elvis signed.

Join your friends on Tuesday, August 2,2005 at 7pm at Schulers Books & Music

So it's basically going to be a freeper meeting?

Should I go for the entertainment value?

2. Go for the entertainment value if you see a sheep!
So I had a shepherd and a sheep on stage, and I brought all the kids down. Then I wanted them to run all over the building, all over the place shouting, "Glory to God in the highest." And at that moment the sheep is pooping on stage. So I'm trying to tell the kids to go, and they're all staring at the sheep. It was a great moment.

Tell us about the scapegoat message. Did you actually have a goat?

I preached that sermon one time at Willow Creek and the goat pooped right on the stage. A great moment in that fine church's history.

4. You could go armed with all the interviews and evidence of
torture and ask the question whether or not they, as Christians, support an administration that allows this kind of abuse.

5. I was just thinking of sitting back
and listening to what he is saying and report all of the funny, insane stuff back. I'm not really confrontational... but I will try to ask question that are ummm... subversive. Kinda like: Would Jesus support the current war we are in?

6. Why not? If it turns out to be slanted to the right you can just get up
and leave. :)

9. Nah, I had a couple of bumperstickers
but both got stolen as well as my "We're in big trouble when our bombs are smarter than our President."

I am thinking of buying a DU t-shirt but I don't have any money and it wouldn't get it in time.

11. "Velvet Elvis" is the title of a GREAT song . . .
by a wonderful trio from Maine called Devonsquare . . . written by Devonsquare (Alana MacDonald, Tom Dean & Herb Ludwig) with Rex Fowler of Aztec TwoStep (who also perform the song) . . . GREAT music (if you can find it) . . .

Velvet Elvis
©Fowler, MacDonald, Ludwig & Dean

Behold, the selling of the king
But ah that boy could sing
A sentimental man upon a throne
But he was all alone
Another sacrificial son
I can’t believe what they have done to you

Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis
Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis

His reach was long he grasped the ring
The man had everything
And some still wonder where you are Elvis
They wish upon your super star
But you knew your roll and played your part
Before you died of a broken heart

Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis
Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis

Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true
Don’t be cruel to…
Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis
Velvet Elvis, Velvet Elvis
