My son is in prison for four more years. I am rendered aghast and dumfounded from the frequent expression of graphic punishment wished upon him. I have met quite a large number of warm, progressive folks here. In my enthusiasim I have posted too many details about my life so I will be leaving this userID and returning with a different ID. Please think of people that are incarcerated for property crimes before you condem(sp?) prisoners to conditions that include forcible rape.
:wtf:
Thank you to those that have made me feel part of this community.

1. I don't condemn a single prisoner to forcible rape. |
|
Its an abomination and human rights violation, and there's bipartisian support behind that sentiment.

5. I agree. No rape is ever funny and that includes prison rape |
|
Sorry you've had to endure the poor taste and judgement of others on that one. I hope your son does rehabilitate himself when he gets out. It's tough when even progressives seem to disbelieve rehabilitation is possible even though I've seen it up close.

I didn't see any of the threads on this. Sorry for the grief you've encountered from some very immature and thoughtless people. As someone else posted here, there are a lot of decent people on this board, something you've evidently found. Unfortunately, there are a number of jerks, too.
I know you and I will never meet again on these boards, micrometer_50, but I hope I make your acquaintance under your new name.
Good luck, and may your son be safe until you meet him again, hopefully a changed man as well.

10. All you have to do is use the word "prison" ... |
|
... and there are fifty or more DUers who immediately post and crack "wise" about prison rape.
Then there's the persistent lynch mob mentality, especially over "pedophiles", most of whom have not even been charged, let alone convicted. The number of pedo frenzy articles in the newspaper is about ten times the number of actual pedophiles; on DU, it's more like 30-to-1. The Michael Jackson case brought them all out of the woodwork, too.
Sorry about the problems you faced, micrometer_50. There's a whole lot of angry people around here who don't care who they hurt, as long as they get to have their daily temper tantrum or tell a few smutty jokes about prison rape.
I don't know what your son did to be imprisoned, but if indeed he took a bad course in life, I hope he straightens himself out; and in any event, I hope he bears prison well. And if he's innocent, even more so -- punished innocence seems to be more common in this world than unpunished guilt.
Be well. I'll see you 'round, in another name.

My ex-BIL got himself into a world of trouble but it never changed how I felt about him. He was a loving gentle kid who made some bad choices. We stuck by him and he is now a happily married, well adjusted and much wiser contributor to society. He makes his dad (an ex-police chief) proud.

Yes, he made some bad choices. Yes, he should be punished for what he did. The acceptance of BUBBA as roommate is betond the pale.

26. I only ask because... |
|
...I wanted to establish the *context* of what kind of crime we are talking about here. It's helpful to posters in the thread.
I'm sorry you've witnessed that kind of reaction here, but I assure you it's probably a very tiny minority of posters who feel that way.
The vast majority of us don't feel that way at all. Peace.

29. My brother is a prison guard. |
|
They like to be called "correctional officers." Unfortunately, from hearing him talk, I get the feeling he is just continuing what he did when we were kids. He was cruel to animals, beating our pets and killing wild animals, sometimes for no reason at all. Now he can be cruel to men in cages and get paid for it.
My brother thinks he's such hot shit, but I doubt he'd have enough guts to be a real police officer on the beat. The "bad guys" can shoot back.
It's just a feeling I get when I'm around him. He gives me the creeps. I don't like feeling this way, but I think my hunches are spot-on.
Sorry about your kid. Some people belong in prison. Some people belong in rehab.

He does not deserve barbaric punishment.
I have a cousin that's a corrections officer in another state. There are some good'uns and some bad'uns.
Thanks for the empathy for my son. :D

He sounds like a classic case.
Read "High Risk: Children Without a Conscience" by Ken Magid for info on the making of serial killers and other assorted cruel types. No offense. It just might help you understand the condition some.
