Western state governor pulling national guard troops from Iraq?
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 02:16 AM by paineinthearse
I seem to recall some months back that the governor of a western state N/S Dakota(?) was not sending/pulling troops back from Iraq because they were needed for the summer fire fighting season.

Anyone remember the post / is there any new information? Are any other governors exercising their state's right by not giving their state militia to * war effort?

1. You're thinking of Montana.
But that's all I know about it.

5. Got curious so I googled
BushCo refused to release the troops. Not only did Montana not get those troops back, more got activated. 44% of the guard is activated.

There is an uncontrolled wildfire burning right now as I type:

POLSON - After seeing firsthand how the town of Plains narrowly escaped a quick-moving wildfire, Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Tuesday he's considering activating the Montana National Guard to help control the fire, which singed the outskirts of town.

The fire remained uncontrolled Tuesday night, but it no longer directly threatens the town of Plains.

"This is a fire that could become very serious," Schweitzer said after his visit to the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation fire dispatch headquarters near the Plains airport. After a briefing, Schweitzer flew over the area in a helicopter to get a bird's-eye view of the terrain and the path and scope of the fire so far.
"We went through a million dollars from 5:30 p.m. yesterday to 1 o'clock today," he said afterward. "We saved a lot of structures in the process."

6. Direct action
1. The miliitia (National Guard, etc) are under the control of the states (governors), they have NOT been nationalized because no declaration of war exists.

2. How about an action in the form of a referendum (for those states that have referenda) to restrict the use of states' troops for undeclared wars?
