I need some help for a research paper...please |
|
Assignment "Using current day research (the past ten years) explore what the effects of a national or personal identification card might have on our society as a whole. How have national ID cards been used in other countries? Are they effective at stopping terrorism in other countries? Use current day articles in conjunction with articles from our text book to prove your point. Make an argument for or against identification cards beyond the typical photo ID and SS card that we currently carry".
My stance is AGAINST....does anyone have any handy sources bookmarked that I can readily find? Many many thanks!

2. One angle of attack... |
|
...is to draw similarities to the way that Social Security numbers were abused -- put on drivers licenses, used as account numbers by companies, as employee id numbers, resulting in a situation where a person who's SS# is stolen is more likely to have their life and assets fucked with bigtime. All because they decided it was easier to use this standardized number instead of come up with their own.
A national ID card would be heavily relied on by commerce, employers, etc, and if counterfieted would present the same security problems.

Do you really want to live in a "papers please" country? Because that's what it'll come to.

the Cato Institute has some info on the issue. I happened upon it when I was researching the consequences of the Real I.D. Act. Here are some links I saved. Hope it helps. http://www.cato.org/dailys/9-23-97.htmlhttp://www.cato.org/tech/tk/010928-tk.htmlThis link is about the UK card system. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/05/complete_idcard_guide/Link to ACLU, and their feelings on the issue. http://www.aclu.org/Privacy/Privacy.cfm?ID=9254&c=39

13. My view. We have nothing to hide, we have not broken any law, but |
|
when you have corporate America running this country and now reaching globally, there is way to much abuse for the bnefit of a few profiteers.
It goes both ways no secrecy in governments, no secrecy for all. But that is a society several hundred years from now, when humankind finally learns to respect each other and takes care of each other.
