An Update on DU Candidate in Local Election
I posted my intention to run for a School Committee seat in my home town back in April.

Some fellow DUers were interested in being updated.

To recap, I figured if I could canvass in New Hampshire for John Kerry, where I knew virtually no one, I might as well get involved by canvassing in my home town for myself, where I know virtually everyone.

Tuesday was the filing deadline, and I am certified to be on the ballot in the election November 8th. Nine candidates are vying for six seats. I have been working my butt off every night after work by going door to door. I have completed 50% of the city, and should be all done by the beginning of October, when we will start sign holding and direct mail to the finish. On Tuesday, I expect to be the only candidate in my race to be endorsed by the central labor council of the AFL-CIO. This is a big deal in such a predominately blue-collar community.

If you are interested in a peek of the local paper today, it has analyzed my race, up to now. Scroll down to "The School Race", and it shouldn't be difficult to figure out who louis c is.

Thanks for all your encouragement, and I hope more DUers will get directly involved in elections in their communities. After all, "Tip" O'Neill said it best, "all politics is local".

21. Well, a little bad news
It seems that the AFL-CIO endorsement that I expected on Tuesday will be delayed a couple of weeks because of the turmoil at the Chicago convention and the split in the ranks of the organization. All endorsements are put on hold.

Although I received the recommendation from the board, and fully expect the endorsement, should they make any all.

Talk about bad luck. Here is an organization that is 70 years old, and they break up 4 days before my scheduled endorsement.

I have been told it is only a delay of a couple of weeks. I hope that's the case.

We think Louis Ciarlone falls into almost the same category.
His late father Chico was on the School Committee for so many years, it is impossible to remember exactly when it all began for the Ciarlones.

Louis inherits this mantle. Even though his father has been gone for some time, the Ciarlone name is about as well known as any in political circles, and in wider circles of society in this community, his name is well known.

Add to this the fact that he is campaigning, and campaigning hard – virtually the only School Committee hopeful seriously going door to door throughout the summer months.

Ciarlone should score a seat, if all things are equal.

13. From my experience, tenacity trumps money almost every time
at least on the local level...

Going door to door is the most important part of politics...

I know you probably know this already, but...

Take notes about every house you visit....

Send notes to them after a while, personalized ones. Send thank you notes to everyone who signed your petition....

Start a mailing list to keep people up to date on wheat it is you are doing....

Whenever possible, get a union guy from the neighborhood to walk door to door with you...

Good Luck!!!!!

hard work is essential. And I see you are not afraid to do it....

19. awesome! best of luck with your campaign!
I've worked for a school trustee for 3 elections now -- she's also been getting into state-level politics, and people keep urging her to try for the federal nomination. It's a terrific way to get experience, as a candidate or as a campaign worker.
