New Englanders & Ex-New-Englanders: Filene's is no more
I will miss seeing their annual bridal gown sale on TV, where the dainty brides become raving maniacs stomping over everyone to get at a marked-down gown :)

===

The Filene's name brand is being retired, Federated Department Stores, Inc. announced this morning.

However, the fate of the landmark store in Boston's Downtown Crossing has not yet been decided, according to Jim Sluzewski, spokesman for Federated which owns Macy's and is in the process of merging with May Department Stores which owns Filene's.

"This is still under study," Sluzewski said, regarding the Downtown Crossing location where both Macy's and Filene's are anchor stores. "We have many options."...

Federated Department Stores, Inc. today announced it will add about 330 Macy's locations nationwide in 2006, as part of its pending takeover of May Department Stores Co.

2. Sad! Filene's & Macy's were great stores. Banana, GAP, A&F are now hottest
I think the clothes at most of these 'mall stores' are old and tired looking. I shop mostly at Abcrombie, GAP, Banana Republic, etc....much better choices in style.

3. When I was about 5 yrs old my mother would take me into Filene's
basemant for the sales. For a little kid that was naked "TERRORISM".

I would just stand back and watch women shredding clothing they were yanking away from each other. "I saw that FIRST!" was the battlecry I heard most.

What I really miss are the Lionel train displays the had next door at Jordan Marsh.

6. The bridal sale is at Filene's Basement-which is no longer related
to Filene's.

Filene's, like Jordan Marsh before it, was a tradition here. They still have better sales than Macy's. I get most of my work clothes there. :cry:

I can only imagine how many jobs that will mean to our local economy. We have been getting nailed: Fleet, Gillette, HP, and so many other companies have laid off thousands here this year.

7. This is going to be a big blow for malls that have Macy's AND Filenes...
... as anchor stores.

Natick Mall spings to mind.
