Mudslinging in a primary.

In my district the State Rep is term limited. His legislative aid entered the race for that spot, which was fine until the Rep’s wife said she wanted to run also. Now the State Rep is orchestrating the mother of all whisper campaigns against his former aide and anyone who supports that candidate. The things the Rep is saying are as ugly as these things can get. The Rep is operating from a position of power and has a fair amount of success in trashing his former friend, but the shit is eventually going to hit the fan. The primary is 9 months away, I'm afraid there will be dead bodies if he continues at this rate.

Why do Democrats do this to each other? Has anyone else been in this position? Is there hope?
