Are there many countries that have military bases in other countries?
Or just the US and Britain? A "spoils of war" thing? Imperialism?

1. The US has 725 bases...
... overseas. That should answer your question. No other country has that presence outside its borders. Period.

2. That doesn't answer the question..
He's asking if any countries other than Britain and the U.S have bases outside of their own countries.

4. Germany has one in New Mexico
They have sovereign control over a portion of Holloman Air Force Base at Alamagordo, New Mexico, for training purposes.

From: http://www.newmexico.org/place/loc/cities/page/DB-place/place/1518.html

On 1 May 1996, the German Air Force Tactical Training Center was established in concept with the 20th Fighter Squadron which provides aircrew training in the F-4F Phantom II. The TTC serves as the parent command for two German air crew training squadrons. The F-4 Training Squadron oversees all German F-4 student personal affairs, and provides German instructor pilots to cooperate in the contracted F-4 training program provided by the U.S. Air Force (20th Fighter Squadron). A second TTC unit, the Tornado Training Squadron, provides academic and tactical flying training, by German Air Force instructors, for German Tornado aircrews. The first contingent of Tornado aircraft arrived at Holloman in March 1996. More than 300 German Air Force members are permanently assigned at Holloman to the TTC--the only unit of its kind in the United States. The German Air Force Flying Training Center activated March 31 with German Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Portz and U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Ryan present.

I think this is the only such base in the US, but I could be wrong.

6. France has 34 000 troops abroad.
France maintains permanent military bases in Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Gabon, and Senegal.

There is a temporary airbase in Kyrgystan too, for the participation in Enduring Freedom.

The Djibouti base is often used by the US military, specially in cases like the launch of drones on Yemen in retaliation for the bombing of the USS Cole.

The other bases are on French territory overseas (Pacific, Indian Ocean, Carribeans)

34,000 French troops are deployed overseas, including 13,000 participating in peace-keeping operations

A significant number of French troops are deployed overseas. Basically, they serve two main purposes: pre-positioning requirements and peace-keeping operations. For this later course of action, French troops are participating in world stabilization mandated by UN resolutions as part of NATO or coalitions. Those actions are currently taking place in Africa, the Balkans, and Afghanistan. Some of them are addressing humanitarian crises (Darfur). Consequently, France is indeed a major contributor to NATO and the largest one in Kosovo with 2380 troops (13.71 % of KFOR).

With numerous troops overseas, France is a strong US partner in advancing security throughout the world. As an example, the 7,000 French troops in the Caribbean area and Guyana play a major role in counter drug trafficking alongside the US Joint Inter Agency Task Force South. Another example is found with the 10,000 French forces which are present in the Pacific region and the Southern Indian Ocean where they are controlling sea lanes
