Pelosi: President's Recess Appointment of John Bolton is a 'Mistake'

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush's use of a recess appointment to name John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations.

"The President's decision to circumvent the Senate and use a recess appointment naming John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations is a mistake.

"John Bolton's record provides no evidence of the kind of diplomatic skill, temperament and judgment that ought to be prerequisites for this critical position. There are serious unanswered questions about whether Mr. Bolton improperly used sensitive intelligence information for political purposes, which contributed to the lack of support he had in the Senate.

"For President Bush to use a recess appointment for such a controversial nominee -- not because there was a compelling case that Mr. Bolton was the best person for the job, but merely because the President had the power to do it -- subverts the confirmation process in ways that will further harm the United States' reputation in the eyes of the international community. The American people deserve better."

To me, niceness isn't the issue at all. It's more akin to a self-serving fear of rocking the boat too much and raising the ire of the opposition.

The Repugnicans are giving the Democrats all sorts of gifts and how are they being used to retake the House? Just a question.

Bolton's appointment should make him the poster child of the corruption, lying and arrogance of this regime. I wish Nancy and others would stop using "misleading" or other corporate media terms...time to start saying this regime lies and call these crooks the liar they are.

What's Nancy afraid of? She'd sure score a lot of points with the folks here and in many other Democratic circles if she did start being more direct and encouraging other Democrats to take off the rhetorical restraints. Those who are gonna be offended weren't going to vote for Democrats anyway.

Otherwise, Pelosi's words are just words. I'm glad she's saying them, without a doubt, and it's better than I came to expect from her predecessors in the Democratic Congressional leadership. But actions must follow the words. What gets derailed? What tax cuts for the overrich get stiffed? What government contract gets nixed?

Something has to happen.
