Can someone help me with a debunk....?
I was having a discussion w/ someone about the "blobal stuggle stuggle against violent extremism" last week, and they brought up the old myth that Clinton had it w/i his ability to kill or arrest Bin Laden... blah blah blah.

I told this person that I knew that this had been debunked but that I didn't remember where. I found this:

http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20030922-090026-8355r.htm

But do you all have any other sources?

That would be helpful, thanks.

1. Funny, when Clinton DID try to whack OBL, the repubs crucified him.
Ten minutes with Google should give you all you need to know. Keywords Sudan, cruise missiles, Afghanistan, Clinton, Osama Bin Laden ought to do it.

2. Bush did too. He was offered Osama AFTER 9/11
But had to refuse for similar reasons to Clinton.

Why is it that Republicans didn't have a problem with Bush refusing bin Laden AFTER 9/11?

11. link?
My understanding is that Clinton was NOT offered Bin Laden by the Sudanese.

I did not know that Bush was offered Bin Laden after 9/11.
Could you provide a link please?

===============
Former Sudanese officials claim that Sudan offered to expel Bin Ladin to the United States.
Clinton administration officials deny ever receiving such an offer. We have not found any reliable evidence to support the Sudanese claim.

===============
"There was a story which is factually inaccurate that the Sudanese offered bin Laden to us,” says Mr. Clinton. “As far as I know, there is not a shred of evidence of that.”

4. It's in the 9/11 Commission Report
I don't have a direct link (hopefully somebody better at internet searching can provide it!!)

However, you can point out to this person that the 9/11 Commission was hand picked by Bush.

Please make sure you respond.

Sandy Berger also confirmed this as well, but a quick search by me got all RW links condemning Berger.

5. Check out Richard Clarke's book "Against All Enemies"
Clarke states that *every* request for action against Bin Laden made by the counter-terror types in the Cinton Administration got approval from President Clinton.

Their problem was with having timely intel to act upon and reluctance from Pentagon brass (believe it or not) to do things and then blame it on the White House. They also had a hostile Congress, by the way.

8. You might also ask him why they did NOTHING AT ALL
from Jan 20th to Sept. 11th re terrorism. No meetings of principals, etc. Ashcroft was told by Mueller (I believe) that terrorism would be the biggest challenge facing the Justice Department he replied, that drug use was a much bigger concern.

10. check this CNN link
The Republicans, as usual, were more interested in playing politics than they were in serving the nation. http://www.cnn.com/US/9607/30/clinton.terrorism/

12. from Snopes.com
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 12:45 PM by LSK
"In August 1998, when ordered missile strikes in an effort to kill Osama bin Laden, there was widespread speculation — from such people as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) — that he was acting precipitously to draw attention away from the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, then at full boil. Some said he was mistaken for personalizing the terrorism struggle so much around bin Laden. And when he ordered the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House after domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, some Republicans accused him of hysteria."
