Question about Presidential physicals |
|
Have they always been a matter of "public" knowledge? If not, when did they start to become so? Has any sitting President ever received a bad physical?

1. When FDR died so soon after being reelected ... |
|
... the political "winds" started blowing very hard. After Eisenhower was hospitalized with a left anterior myocardial infarction in September 1955, he broke with precedent and released detailed information about his illness to the public. (After all, he wanted to be reelected in 56.) Late in 1957, Eisenhower was temporarily hospitalized with a mild stroke.
The Eisenhower episodes also gave rise to the Constitutional Amendment covering a transfer of Executive power during a Presidential incapacitation.
