Um, wasn't steroids in sports the big crux of the SOTU a year or two ago??? Of course, it doesn't surprise me that Bush would defend this behavior and insist the test was "wrong".

Baltimore Orioles slugger Rafael Palmeiro, who reached baseball's magical 3,000-hit milestone two weeks ago, has been suspended for 10 days after testing positive for steroids.

Following Monday's announcement, the 40-year-old Palmeiro said he never intentionally ingested steroids, echoing his March 17 testimony before Congress on the subject.

President Bush said he believed Palmeiro.

I ask him about the drugs. He stares at me. Of course he took drugs, he says. You couldn't compete if you didn't take drugs.

It was like they said in the inquiry - if you didn't take drugs you might as well set your blocks up a metre behind the start line.

After the inquiry, insult was heaped upon humiliation when his lawyers considered a defence suggesting he was too stupid to understand why he had been taking steroids. Johnson may be no academic but he knew exactly what he was taking and why.
