Defense Department Files Secret Arguments in Further Attempt to Suppress Abu Ghraib Photos

July 29, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: media@aclu.org

NEW YORK -- The Defense Department has filed heavily redacted papers in a further attempt to suppress photographs and videos that depict the abuse of prisoners held at Abu Ghraib, the American Civil Liberties Union said today. The move is the government's latest effort to block the release of materials requested by the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act.

"The government's recent actions make a mockery of the Freedom of Information Act," said Anthony D. Romero, ACLU Executive Director. "The Defense Department has long dragged its heels on coming clean about the systematic and widespread abuse of detainees, but denying the public the right to even hear its legal arguments for withholding information is a new low."

Last week, on the deadline of a court order requiring the Defense Department to process and redact 87 photographs and four videos taken at Abu Ghraib, government attorneys filed a last-minute memorandum of law and three affidavits arguing against the release of the materials. The government's papers cite a statutory provision that permits the withholding of records "compiled for law enforcement purposes," that "could reasonably be expected to endanger the life or physical safety of any individual."

I really don't wanna see this. The only thing that will come of it is a court martial of some 19 year old Private. We will hear more of the "few bad apples" GOP talking point bullshit. And the White House will continue to block any anti torture legislation. And if it is at all possible the world will hate us more.

12. The world is aware of torture ............
American people need to be fully aware of what has occurred. Some people will only understand when these photos are slammed in front of them.

3. Why haven't any news organizations joined this suit?
Or have they?

And how can they POSSIBLY argue that those photos were compiled for law enforcement purposes??

5. I wish someone would leak them.
If these photos and video come out and are really horrendous, then the cabal can no longer say they had no knowledge of the abuse. Are they trying to photoshop them???

IMPEACHMENT NOW!!

13. Joe Wilson, George Tenet, Paul Oneill, John Oneill, Richard
Clarke, Sibel Edmonds, Ray McGovern, Morgan Reynolds, Andreas Von Buelow, Meacher, Michael Moore, Karen Kwiatowski, and all the rest... ignored, beaten down, outvoiced by the corporat media. Is this America? No.

17. the important thing about bittorrent is
It's massively distributed (peer-to-peer) and rather difficult to tell where it originally came from.

10. next installment in the saga: August 15
"A hearing has been scheduled in federal court in New York for August 15 to address two issues: whether the public has been improperly denied access to information as a result of the government's redacted briefs, and whether the government should be compelled to release photographs of abuse at Abu Ghraib. "

11. They went after Clinton for misuse of the WH christmas card database
I would be content if they didn't release these, but they were used as evidence along with that Gonzales torture technique memo against the administration. I don't need to see them, but a prosecutor, or a congressional panel should. They have fucked it up for our troops for a long time with this crap.

18. No, I'm Afraid Not
I hate to say it, because I really hate the idea of the pictures inciting more hatred than there already is out there. But the photos must be released - and to everyone, not just a select few. Its taking the bad with the good and if we are to remain free it is essential the the people know, if full detail, what is done in their names. The pictures must be released .

19. I just wish something would be done about them
As a vet, I am fucking sick of the "bad apple" bullshit. I couldn't make an arrest without my Sergeant's permission, yet, they would have us believe that reservists came up with this elaborate torture which just happens to follow the tactics in the Gonzales memo on their own.

Pardon my french, this is a sore point for me. This put our troops in danger, and corrupted some of them in the process.

21. I went under Bush 1, who had a slight clue of how to lead
And knew when to get out, and said we shouldn't go all the way into baghdad, or we would be in an endless insurgency and start a civil war. W should have listened to Pop, in this instance.

Overall, Bush 1 was a lower end mediocre president, but was a decent commander in chief.
