If Roe v.Wade is Overturned, Is it the End of "Them"???
So many times it's the 'little' things that bring down a reign of power because there is an arrogant overreaching. Abortion rights actually is one of the 'little' things when compared to those things that do totally effect everyone in the country (i.e., being lied into wars and the death and price tag resulting from it; the drain of jobs and undercutting of American wages; a rotten and dying healthcare system, etc.). But I sat back today and thought "what if I just turned on the tv and found out that our spankin' new judge (and he will be confirmed)just helped sink Roe v. Wade?? I don't think that the country will just basically yawn and move on. It's the kind of thing that gets attention and gets people talking and bitching. It's the kind of thing that could move Republicans right out of power because of fear of what other midevil treats they have in mind. That's why I believe the dirty core of the Repub Party does NOT want to have this overturned.

1. Nah,
they'd move on to welfare and other issues. They would be marginalized, but not destroyed.

4. Bama, the right might try to move on BUT I'm talking about the
reaction of the sleepy, dopey American people who really don't stay up nights getting into a sweat about minor little stupid stuff like Supreme Court nominees, Bolton, and all that "boring stuff". This is up there with taking away guns or bringing back the draft or taxing beer. That's what I mean about the repubs could be real sorry if this ever comes about.

10.  I am also thinking about prohibition and the 20's
When they tried to outlaw alchol in the 20's. I fear nothing but violence will come out of a ban.

3. Nope. Look at this thread in LBN
Bush endorses teaching `intelligent design' theory in schools

It will never end. They will always find something to bitch about, and as long as the MSM covers their little fits as "news", regardless of how insane, outlandish or wacko it is, it will never end.

5. finecraft--I'm not talking about GOP plans, I'm talking about
Ms and Mrs and Mr America all of a sudden being without something that they took for granted. As I've said in a reply post, the people don't pay attention to any of the stuff we discuss here BUT they pay attention to things like trying to take guns away or taxing beer, etc. See what I mean. They may just have a hornet's nest of people actually paying attention to something and that's deadly for them.

11. So why isn't everyone rioting because gas is $2.50 a gallon?
Why isn't everyone rioting because they are losing their health care benefits left and right? Why isn't everyone rioting because they no longer have pensions? My point is that Mr. and Mrs. America HAVE lost a lot of things they took for granted and the morons STILL vote for Republicans. As long as there is still one more religious issue to beat like a dead horse they will do it....and Mr. and Mrs. America will rationalize that if they don't do the "Moral" thing, they will fry in Hell.

6. If the polls are accurate then it means 60% are pro-choice
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 07:47 PM by Anarcho-Socialist
The GOP likes to walk a fine line. It uses anti-reproductive choice rhetoric to get its core support to mobilise, but all the time aware that most swing-voters support safe legal abortion. I also suspect that the GOP will try to restrict abortion but without banning it to the extent that swing-voters are marginalised from the Republican Party. Any attempts to go for full criminalisation would institute a collapse of Republican support amongst women voters.

7. I've spoken on this before... and gotten flamed
I don't think the damage to the GOP would be as serious as some here have suggested.

Many moderate Republicans are well to do suburbanites who vote Republican because they like the low taxes. They are nominally pro-choice, but if abortion were to be outlawed in their particular states, most of these folks would have the means to get a legal abortion in another state or country. Hence, I could still see many of them voting Republican because what becomes a prohibitive law for poor women will be nothing more than an inconvenience for well to do women.

8. There will be a push to prosecute and jail women who had or will have
abortions. Nothing will satisfy these people until they think they have mad US women submisive and fearful. That's what is really at stake.

14. well, not all women
of course. Nor the girlfriends of influential men. Or the wives of influential men. (right, Bob Barr?). They'll get their abortions. Same for the daughters. They won't go to jail.
Just like drug users. Rush won't go to jail. Noelle Bush got the kid glove treatment.
We'll become even more of a divided society.
And then there's that ugly statistic nobody likes to discuss: where abortions are more readily available, crime is less. And, of course, the reverse. Where abortions are restricted, crime is higher.
Society pays a very high price when unwanted children are born.

9. It is a be careful what you wish for scenario
The Republicans will take a beating in popular elections if the right to an abortion is decided in popular elections.

12. It is not just a "little thing"
Think what made the entire so-called sexual revolution happen. Think about the diference in sexual mores and discussion now and thirty years ago. Remember Roe v. Wade was based on an earlier decision that used privacy rights in the constitution to rule that married couples could not be denied access to birth control. A whole series of rulings followed to where we are now with birth control available to all adults, abortion (with restrictions) available, anti-sodomy laws ruled illegal. We are still fighting the right to own sexual toys in some states. If it's ruled legal in all states it will be on the same right to privacy.

When the SC rules against abortion rights, it will not just affect women of child bearing age. It will affect men who are their partners. It will affect sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, and the entire community. It is not just a small woman's issue. If we think abstinence only sex education is prevalent now, just wait until after abortion is illegal.

This is about the role of women. Women will never gain economic parity if their bodies are under the control of men. Their primary role will be to birth children. Nothing else takes precedence. Not their health or welfate. For some, not even their life.

This fight by the right has never been about only abortion. Anyone who thinks that this is about babies is insane. It's a much bigger issue and affects most social issues today.
