U.S. Considers Redefining 'War'
i didn't see anything about this yet here, so i'm puttin it up. if it's a dupe, by all means, lock it.

WASHINGTON - President Bush and White House officials still use the phrase "war on terrorism" to describe the global fight against al-Qaida and other militant extremists. But with the failure to capture Osama bin Laden and a recent surge in terrorist bombings, there is growing sentiment at the Pentagon and elsewhere in the administration to retire "war" and use broader terms.

The internal debate broke into the open last week when Gen. Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at the National Press Club that he had "objected to the use of the term 'war on terrorism' before."

"Because, if you call it a war, then you think of people in uniform as being the solution. And it's more than terrorism," Myers said. He said "violent extremists" were "the real enemy here and terror is the method they use."

1. Old news. This is now a struggle against exremists.
The war on terror has been done away with. I wonder what W now calls OBL? He once said we would capture him alive or dead. Oh, it's just W, he's off to his ranch and could care less. Yesterday.

4. I guess W might hope to be the pres of the great "struggle"
Face it, he sold the war time president theme to a bunch of idiots who fell for it in 2004. He was a chicken hawk who sent our troops to invade a non-threatening country for the enrichment of his corporate buddies. He may have very well sold our country down the drain. His legacy will damn him for all time.

7. And... "war" also tends towards framing "sides"...
... with one side being on the offensive and the other on the defensive... and with the increased volatility in both Afghanistan and Iraq, plus multiple bombings in London & Madrid, one might begin getting the impression that we're on the defensive in this here war against terrorism.

Fur the invaded side, it's called "collateral damage"

Fur da murikkkan side, well, ain't no more body bags - deys "transfer tubes" now

and the maimed on the murikkkan side?, well , how bout homeless and furgotten

and the "war on drugs" - what will they call that,?

I got it - fur at least the war on them people that like the evil weed - "struggles with mellow peaceful people"

Bemember,

the PNACers need angry warlike people, not mellow peace-luvin nuts . . .

10. There's that use of "extremism" again in place of "terrorism."
It's the "9/11 = Saddam" inoculation all over again. Eventually that phrase from the Declaration of Independence about "the duty of the people to alter or abolish it (the government)" will be labeled Extremist.

11. language change for the purpose of targeting domestic political opposition
Very old, tired story. Either the censorship seals are airtight or everyone's too intimidated to ever publicly say it.
