Hey, Hetros- When did you choose to be straight?
I just started arguing w/ a moran at work, who thinks gay people are "selfish" and if they didn't want to be discriminated against, they shouldn't have chosen to be gay. So I asked him, when he chose to be straight? Now, I personally never chose to be straight, I just...like men. I asked him when he made the choice?

He claims that because he's a christian, the choice was made for him...

:argh:!!!! How the hell do you argue with base stupidity????

(btw, this guy voted for Kerry, because he's his neighbor. That's the ONLY reason why.)

1. Tell him Jesus was gay
The Bible doesn't say he wasn't, and he certainly kissed more men than women.

12. Why is it that guys who think being gay is wrong and they deserve
to be discriminated against have no problems getting off to lesbian porn? I had an argument with a guy about this (he is really religious, anti gay) and he told me that being gay is wrong because the bible says so, but that lesbian porn is OK b/c "they are just pretending." WTF? These people are SO hypocritical!

Which means you get to choose.

If you have free will, then just by calling yourself a Christian wouldn't limit, or even decide, your choices

29. Contradicting dogma makes him a heretic
Which is also a sin.

And preventing another human being from exercising free will is tantamount to opposing the will of God.

Sounds like the guy is going 'straight' to hell.

I have met him and he is wicked!

Off topic, I know but....

Hi Will! :yourock:

Cat here. Just heard from Gentry and he has just signed up here too. His user name if you don't know is "GentryLange." He says that he had dinner with Ted and Julie the other night after her "arrest" and Julie is staying low for now. What a bunch of dolts, I swear (the county people, not Julie and Gentry of course, lol).

18. I grew up in Greenwich Village
I went to school down the street from the Stonewall Inn. I saw gays all around me from the time I was a little child. I even cat sat for the gay couple in the apartment upstairs. I had a gay Aunt.

It never occurred to me that I would have to CHOOSE to be gay or straight. Nobody EVER tried to "recruit" me.

One just is who one is.

24. He's a real genius, that's for sure. Don't argue on their terms....
though. It isn't a religious issue, so don't encourage them in the delusion that it is.

I usually try to point out to people like that that they are GETTING something.... a psychological payoff, an unmerited sense of moral superiority... by demonizing gays. For example, in the case of your coworker, his misatrribution of his majority sexual orientation to the fact that he's "christian" makes him feel special and select... in a pathetic sort of way.

Occasionally, people can be reached this way. They will NEVER be reached by, say, arguing about bible verses.

34. August 5, 1980
my 16th birthday.

I'd agonized over the choice for weeks beforehand. Over and over I handled my stacks of Village People and Donna Summer records, knowing that they might soon be headed down to the used record store in stained cardboard boxes.

And then, the night before I was to choose once and for all, I stopped pacing around and sat down and flipped on the TV. There they were: Charlie's Angels, in all their glory. In that moment I knew how I must choose when the sun rose the next day.

:sarcasm:

36. When that neighbor girl convinced me to play doctor with her.
Just kidding (though I remember the incident fondly).

I think the whole "born that way"/"it's a choice" argument is irrelevant.

To me it's about civil rights. Adults should have the right to cohabit with/marry/have sex with/ anyone that they want to, who is willing without coercion.

I have no idea why I'm straight, nor do I particularly care if it's in my genes or due to my upbringing, or that neighbor girl's curiousity.

I am glad that I don't have to face the bigotry, violence, and hatred endured by my gay sister-in-law, my gay friends, or all the other gays that are the targets of the "moral" types who inflict it on them.

37. The first time I saw a photograph of Juliet Greco -- I was maybe...
age 10 or perhaps even 12 and I think the picture was in Life magazine, probably illustrating some story about Paris bohemia; I was already smitten by her singing. (I think I sensed even then that bohemia would be my scene too -- though probably not in Paris. Funny how perceptive kids are...)

As to the Christomoron at work, don't beat your head against the impenetrable wall of hard-shell Biblical taboos. You'll just get bruises.

38. I get the same kind of thing
People hassle me all the time for being a picky eater. As if I put some food in my mouth and say to myself "I like the way this tastes and feels, but I do not think I like this food" or "yeah this tastes terrible, but I think I will like this." Of course it is possible to eat or drink something until it becomes an acquired taste - like cigarettes or beer, but people are always saying things like "Try this, it's really good". When what they mean is "I really like this," which is not the same thing.

As far as sexual orientation, someone did point out to me that I was probably given encouragements at a very early age that continued throughout my childhood, and also, unconsciously I was following my main role model - my dad. Anyway, this is just amateur speculation. It is not like I have done that much reading on human sexuality.

I have known several bisexuals who have chosen not to act on their same sex attractions because of social, family, or religious pressure. That sounds like what he was saying when he said that Christianity (his church community) made his decision for him.

I think it was another 11 or so years 'till the next one. But anyway, yeah, I was probably aware of a physical attraction back then.

And I imagine that gays have some notion of their orientation pretty early as well. Which is why I'm so disgusted by fundies and their futile efforts to "cure" them there homersexuals.
