Subtraction by Addition?

President Bush made a mistake yesterday, well, I am sure he made several, however, this one he did on the world’s stage. Our country was made weaker in the eyes of the world with the recess appointment of John Bolton.

Recess appointments happen, and they are a tool that many Presidents have used to bypass the Senate, however, there is a reason that no President has ever used a recess appointment for the post of United Nations Representative. Much to the amazement of some Americans, the rest of the world is up on current events and they can see that our new representative has little or no support. Mr. Bolton, who seems to be disliked by just about every person that has ever met the man, is there on the whim of a President that has his lowest approval ratings ever.

Our country has gone over six month without a permanent representative to the United Nations. Now, we will have to endure a year with a permanent representative that world knows as lame duck.

Make no mistake about it; this is not a partisan issue, this is an American issue. Strong, conservative Senators such as George Voinovich (R – Ohio), a protégé of Vice President Dick Cheney has spoken out against Mr. Bolton. Also, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), a Bolton supporter, said a recess appointment "would weaken not only Mr. Bolton but also the United States".

I realize of course that elections have meaning. A President has the right to nominate who he or she feels is the best person for the job, and if that person is qualified (i.e. John Roberts for Supreme Court) than that person should receive the appointment. However, Mr. Bolton is the wrong man for this job. He has shown in his actions and words that he has little respect for the U.N. and for people in general

1. I agree with almost everything -

Except the tacit assumption that Roberts is qualified. Since we haven't had any senatorial inquiry into him whatsoever, and since he has no track record to speak of, and since his judicial experience is limited to 2 years as a judge, I'll withhold judgement on whether he's qualified.

Your correct, I spoke to soon on his qualifications, and I will revise what I wrote on my blog.
