I didn't get to ask Senator Durbin any questions, but I did get to shake his hand and tell him I was his biggest supporter and I wanted him to know he had many, many supporters out there and we all agreed with his GITMO statement. He said, "Thank you so much. You have no idea how much that means to me. " Then he asked who my son was, introduced himself to him and chatted with him for a few seconds. I was getting ready to ask him questions and this 80 year old, anti-choice wench interrupted us. MORE about this encounter later.
My son and I were standing there waiting for Durbin and up walks 2 Anti-choice women with their anti-choice signs. One had a sign that had a pic of a baby with LIFE written in huge letters. The other 80 year old anti-choice wench's sign was the different stages of a fetus.
I was standing there taking pictures of the crowd and the 80 year old, anti-choice wench says to me, "Are you taking pictures for yourself?" I said, "yes, I am." She says, "Just think about all the aborted babies that can't be at this event." !@#$#@! I said, "No, I would rather think about the babies that have already been born and are starving on our streets." She said, "Well, that shouldn't be happening either, but abortion is murder." !@#$%$#@! I said, "NO, abortion is NOT murder and the problem with you anti-choice people is you worry about fetuses until their born and then you stop caring." SHE WAS SPEECHLESS. She didn't say another damn word to me. ;) What could she say? IT'S THE TRUTH!
Then, she was standing next to me and 2 little girls who looked like they were 8-10 years old were walking by her and she says to them, "Are you girls here alone?" They told her they were (they lived right across the street) and she says, "Oh! Why don't you stand here by me? you can stand on each side of my sign. See my sign? These are pictures of a baby being formed and some people have abortions to kill them." @#$%$#@! She was USING those 2 little girls for props and brainwashing them while she was using them! I kid you not. She was a TOTAL nut-job.
Then, when I finally had my chance to get to Senator Durbin and ask a question or 2 or 3, I made the above comment and it was THAT 80 year old anti-choice wench who walked up and interrupted us with her anti-choice bullshit. Durbin handled her like a champ (I was standing right next to him while she bitched). He explained his position was to make sure there were FEWER abortions and we should have better family planning available to women, but we should leave it up to women what they wish to do with their bodies. She agreed that we need better family planning. He told her he understood her strong feelings on the issue, but he thought they could agree that we need better family planning available and leave it at that. She said, "No, I think we should agree there will be no more abortions." He said, (in the softest, kindest, most gentle voice) "You know what? We could stand here debating this all day and you won't change your mind and I won't change my mind. I think we can agree to disagree." She said, "No. Abortion is murder." I chimed in and said, "NO, abortion is not murder" and that was when his girl grabbed him for a journalist to interview him and he walked away and the lady turned on her heel and walked away.
What a NICE, NICE man. So warm and friendly. I'm so glad I got to meet him and am sorry I didn't get to ask any questions. :(
