There were no protesters outside the church. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which operates two anti-gay Web sites, had said they would picket for 30 minutes before the funeral.

The group claims an improvised explosive device similar to the one that killed Opskar was used to bomb their church in 1995. The group said it plans to picket a memorial service for Opskar on Thursday, in Princeton, where he grew up.

Hundreds of people lined South Eighth Street, some waving flags and others with their hands over their hearts, as Opskar's funeral procession left the church.

Sarah Holston and her daughters, 5-year-old Emily, and 4-year-old Abigail, watched the procession to pay their respects.

"It's so sad," said Holston, 36. "I just wanted (his family) to know they're not alone.

"That's a huge price to pay for their country. And I just think it's important that they know we appreciate it."


this is the second time in less than two months they've threatened to protest and then failed to make good on their threats...meanwhile they insult and enrage people and get their obscene message out there....

His picketing notices read "They turned America over to the f*gs", now they come home in body bags". How does his twisted little mind conceive that US soldiers turned the country over to gay people? :crazy:

The people I work with (who actually have mental illnesses) don't come up with things that sound as bizzarre as that. Phelps needs to be committed.
