So if God created us, as is, who was Lucy?
(she was an austalopithicine aferensis, and she's believed to be over 4 million years old- she sure as hell doesn't look like me)

What about all the fossils we've found in various places?

What about the fact that people are taller than they were TWO GENERATIONS AGO???

G-d put the bones in the ground to confuse us when we started looking...I mean, dinosaurs aren't mentioned in the bible, so they couldn't have *really* existed

It's God testing man's Faith
The fundies believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and that all of the fossils that have been found were put in place by God to test man's faith.

6. "It's a miracle!!!!!!!!"
The religous right will tell you that the great diety in the sky actually created all that stuff too and plunked it down 5000 years ago-all fossils, all sediments, all aged organic compounds etc. Guy is really smart, he thought of all the forensic evidence needed and just created it all in the blink of an eye. Guess he just wants to tease us.

8. No, no, no, not the fossil, but the SHAPE
of her. She isn't human. She is a pre-human, of the Astlopithicine era.

How can we rectify a skeleton that SHOWS to be before evolution.

16. I was an anthro major and had this
very debate over and over and over with some members of my family who are christians and they insist that dating techniques are flawed, refuse to listen to "facts" and universally dismiss them by claiming satans influence.. specifically I have heard some hysterical "scientific" evidence from their camp that proves Lucy to be a fraud and just about every other fossil ever found... they have a lot "facts" that they repeat over and over (reminds me of the RNC with their talking points)... its a waste of time to try and convince them of anything....

and I never, not once, heard anyone debate this.
I'm from NH too :hi: and I know my share of R's, and Catholics, but until recently, arguing about evolution seemed like arguing about photosynthesis.

Are people stupider? Or are stupid people more vocal?

33. Thats a good question!
My opinion is they are more vocal.. the born agains have been claiming for years that Lucy's remains are nothing more than 3 or 4 bone fragments and that their is widespread disagreement in the scientific community regarding whether she was bipedal (Its been about 10 yrs since I last had this debate) and that the lack of consensus according to the christian right was "kept under wraps" and that Lucy's critics where silenced... Its very easy you would think to refute the fact that Lucy is more than just 3 or 4 bone fragments... Trying to argue that she was bipedal is like trying to teach a dog to play the fiddle... Impossible with these people.. .they have an answer for everything they cant back up with facts and essentially that answer is satan...

11. this is what amuses me about creationists
they take the bible to literally and ignore factual evidence.

I'm catholic, but I personally lean towards the intelligent design theory of things. However, this is a belief and not actually factual and shouldn't be taught in school science classes(religion maybe but not science).

At anyrate creationism is completely bogus. Here's a good site debunking one of the more popular creationists.

28. Sad thing is
The bible is not a litteral account yet they ignore it. It is just a way to "best describe" how the world was created to somone who live 3000 years ago. Try to explain string theory, relativity, Nuclear fusion, black holes and so on to someone 3000 years ago.

Of course if these Scientists theories are so wrong then the Atomic bomb would have never worked.

34. Wow - no one has given the answer I grew up with
After the "fall" people became degenerate and wicked - that's why god had to destroy the world with a flood. These fossils are from degenerate humans (who may have even mated with apes).

(nice attitude, isn't it?)

Oh yea, and carbon dating is based on the flawed assumption that the ratios of isotopes have always been constant, which you can't prove neya neya neya!

And, in all seriousness, the fact that we're taller now than a couple of generations ago is unlikely to have much to do with natural selection - but rather with lifestyle changes associated with the advance of technology.

(Brief note: carbon dating works for biological materials, not for rocks or fossils where what is left isn't the original biological material, but rather minerals deposited after the death of the organism. There are other dating techniques for those).

H. habilis is a flawed genus - is just a collection of misclassified fragments.
