I support teaching Intelligent Design in science class |
|
...and exposing it for the silly bunk that it is.

4. Funny, I was thinking the same thing today. |
|
ID will backfire.
Hell, it fails the fundies right out of the gate, because it accepts much evolution.
Joe Amerifundy wants little Suzy to go to school and have the teacher say that evolution is total bunk, and the bible is reasonable. ID says no such thing.

6. I'd rather just teach evolution. |
|
At least get that taught and then spend time on silly things like debunking Creationism and chemtrails.

But exposing fallacious constructs is one of the good ways to teach scientific method -- like the poster above said, equivalently to how astrology or alchemy is debunked in class.

8. Sure, in a perfect world. |

But there's so much kids aren't learning properly in science classes that it's a pretty low rung on the list of priorities.

Critical thinking? Good grief, that's far too dangerous!

10. in light of the the NSTA outcry... |
|
if the science teachers org is going to be the ones teaching the theory and they are already chaffing, imagine what kind of treatment it's going to get in the classroom.
"class, now that we've finished the subject of aether, geocentrism, and lamarkian trait inheritence, let's focus on another relic from the dust-bin of long debunked crackpot theories... intelligent design."

19. I am so glad you said this |
|
Everyone needs to realize that state standards are merely recommended by the state. They are not mandates. I do not know any Science teachers who would actually favor teaching ID over evolution. I hear they are out there, but I don't know any. And unless we send out ID cops to every Science classroom in America, no way can we can enforce any recommendation to teach ID.

If these ID idiots believe that equal time should be given, then lets make sure we give equal time to ALL creation myths and turn science into a fucking philosophy class. Hell, that will help all the students do even better on those fucking state standardized tests and then their AYP goes even further into the shitter.
I am a science teacher and am so fucking fed up with all this talk of ID as even close to being equal to evolution. As far as I can tell, ID (creationism) dumbfucks have had supposedly 3,000 years to provide evidence for their "theory" and last time I checked they have as much as Raelians do for E.T. creationism. I believe that we have solid evidence for evolution in a matter of 150 years. Now tell me, ID, where the fuck is your evidence?
Fine, you want to quote the Bible, then complete some experiments that supposedly support or disprove it. That is what we do in science. We quote scientific studies and then go out and try to disprove them. You want to be part of the scientific community, then do science. We would take you a little more seriously.
Secondly, we are extremely hard on our peers when it comes to doing science and providing evidence for concepts or events in science. And we better be damn sure we have our ducks in a row before we open our mouths. Seems like to me, you open your mouths, we give you shit, and you get mad and look for a group hug.
You keep recreating your same ideas and packaging it with a different title. Give me a break! Science doesn't take anything on faith. Why must we keep harping on that, show me the EVIDENCE!
Rant off! (for now)

21. I teach a unit on Lysenko's theories in my biogeography course ... |
|
We look at how he teamed up with Stalin to crush Russian biology for decades (and exiled or murdered the scientists who suggested the Darwinian view of evolution was more apt than the Lamarckian perspective that Lysenko was pushing). The students learn that mixing political or religious ideology with science can result in serious problems.
