4. Some take it upon themselves to improve the lives of Iraqis
At some sites where you can send a care package to a soldier, some ask nothing for themselves but ask for school supplies and clothes for kids among other things. Some are rabidly pro-war and some believe its a big mistake and speak of low morale. It isnt cut and dry.

6. Baloney.
I saw this pic 2 years ago. He did this because he wanted to create some good stuff over there. I think he might have died, too, but that could also be baloney.

8. He went to the trouble to grow grass in the desert
next to some troop tents?

Why?

Hey whatever floats your boat, I guess. But I would guess that's not something he was made to do. That was something he wanted to do.

20. You might be right , but
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 02:45 AM by ConsAreLiars
I read the following and assumed it meant the country of Qatar. This one: http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/qa.html

From the Snopes site: "A former staff sergeant with the United States Air Force wrote to tell us: The grass patch is located at the recently declassified Air Force base in Qatar, known as Al Udeid. I lived three months of my life (fall of 2002) two tent rows from that grass."

I've found no reference, in a very quick search, to a city named Qatar in Iraq, but there may be one. But the Al Udeid Air base mentioned in Snopes is in the country of Qatar, not in Iraq.

(edit to identify the Snopes quote and to add that here seem to be cases in both Qatar and Iraq. Trying to make an alien place more like home, in both cases.) )

22. No, I was confused
My apologies. I've seen the pathetic attempts USAns make trying to re-create their familiar homes in alien lands - these (not this, my error) are two cases in point.

Some guys just get obsessive about keeping up the lawn, maybe he just couldn't let go. Or it makes him feel like home.

16. Its proably a Welcome Diversion
I don't know what he's doing exactly...

But my guess is that its proably a welcome diversion from dodging bullets and blowing people up.

I know if I were in a war zone, to have some time for a little gardening would proably be quite a luxury.
