Iraq Is Bringing Bush DOWN >>>

Approval of Bush's Handling of Iraq Drops

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer
Friday, August 5, 2005

Americans' approval of President Bush's handling of Iraq is at its lowest level yet, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that also found fewer than half now think he's honest.

Approval of Bush's handling of Iraq, which had been hovering in the low- to mid-40s most of the year, dipped to 38 percent.

William Anderson, a retired Republican from Fort Worth, Texas, said Bush "has the right intentions, but he's going about them the wrong way."

"Iraq is one of the issues that everybody has a problem with," Anderson said. "There are some big discussions about it around town. Everybody's got their agreements and disagreements. It seems like there's no end. Is it going to end up another Vietnam?"

Continuing worries about Iraq may do more than drag down Bush's standing with the public. They could become a major issue in the 2006 midterm congressional races, and if the war is still going in 2008, they could be a factor in the presidential race.

1. That and a whole lot of other things...
Plame, Rove, Bolton, Iraq, and so on and so on...

In the end, it's Bush's arrogance that is bringing him down.

4. I must disagree
It is NOT Iraq that is bringing his #s down. It is he. Period.

Iraq is but a symptom of reckless disregard, of impeachable lies, of baseless arrogance, of wrong-headed policies that place a peculiar brand of religion above the welfare of the nation, and a concerted effort to dismantle our social welfare systems, while enriching the largest of the large corporations AND the eradication of constitutional protections.

Iraq is not the source, it is a victim of hubris and ill-thought out policies.

12. All kinds of things could happen
Find Osama

Find Zarqawi

Find WMD's

Engage in another conflict

Serious threat of another attack on US soil

Hussein found guilty

A couple of months of decent economic news

China makes some noise...

Any of these would boost ratings. Look for some of these just before midterm elections.

17. Add to that list a declaration of victory in Iraq followed by some
charade of a reduction troops (which they'll have to do anyway, since they're running out of IED fodder).

That should cheer everybody up a little.

If they hold on to the Congress, I am scared spitless about what they will do after 2006 to try to continue to control all three branches.

18. Unfortunately, I'll have to believe it when I see it. As far as I can
tell, Bush has just as much power now as he did a year ago. These kind of polls don't remove him from office.

22. The corporate media will have the masses glued to the set
shortly...watching "The Trial of Saddam".

They will work real hard to make it as much of a PR event for the Bush administration as they can. They will censor what they don't like, and feed us the rest with a great big spoon. It won't be pretty....and I hope it backfires big time.

But, I'm just saying, that will be the comming distraction to keep the American people sedated enough to try to keep the GOP majorities in the congress.

That's my take on their plan.

PRESIDENT George W. Bush is watching public support haemmorrhage for his handling of Iraq, and the bleeding seems especially acute in Ohio, the state that sent him back to the White House.

32. Bush Losing Support, Weight, But Obviously Not Any Sleep
Jake and the Fat Man: President Bush got back the two sets of numbers he cares most about this weekend. On Friday, his approval ratings hit an all-time low. On Saturday, Bush's doctors said his weight is at its lowest point since 2001.

The president probably looks at these numbers and decides that on balance, it was a pretty good week. For the rest of us, it's like an old good-news, bad-news joke. The good news is, your doctors say you're "fit for duty"; the bad news is, you're worse at it than ever.
