Juan Cole absolutely nails the "shaped charges from Iran" news!
Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me--can't get fooled again

The bizarre report by Jim Miklaszewski of NBC news that US military sources are saying Iran is the source of more sophisticated bombs used by Sunni Arab guerrillas in Iraq seems so unbelievable because it is. Poor Jim is the victim of a high-level Department of Defense black psy-ops operation (or perhaps such an operation has been supplied by a sub-contractor). You wonder if it is Doug Feith's parting gift to the American people-- laying the groundwork for a war with Iran.

This is the give-away sentence:

"Intelligence officials believe the high-explosives were shipped into Iraq by the Iranian Revolutionary guard or the terrorist group Hezbollah, but are convinced it could not have happened without the full consent of the Iranian government."

Earlier in the article it was alleged that the supposedly captured shipment came from northeastern Iran. Yet by this later paragraph, the US military intelligence guys can't tell whether it came from the west or the east, or whether it came from Iran or Hizbullah. But if you don't know whether something comes from Lebanon or Iran, then you really don't know where it came from at all, do you? Lebanon and Iran are not like each other. One speaks Persian, the other Arabic. Why, they aren't even close to one another.

He then goe on with a good number of paragraphs which begin with "Do you notice..." explaining (with links, of course) exactly why the report is not to be believed, and ends with:

Be afraid when you begin to see US government agencies themselves handing out this highly suspect sort of information to major news networks. It means that the sting on the American people has moved from the smoke-filled back rooms to some higher operational level.

Or maybe trial balloons are being floated to see how gullible we are.

This link should go to your e-mail lists, pronto!

1. Lots of good reasons
to be suspicious....

Jim Miklaszewski should look for second and third independent sources before broadcasting this crap as truth..

expect to hear limpballs and (in)sanity trumpeting this news shortly.

2. Voice of congress
Congress was fooled in 2001 by WH deception regarding Iraq....Fooled into handing over authority to the president to go to war in hopes that the WH would use that authority to take a tougher diplomatic stance.

Here we are four years later with hints that the administration is eyeing Iran, which the neocons considered the ultimate prize all along.

Where is the voice of congress now with respect to Iran? Has congress or any group of congressmen stepped forward to say that the mistakes of 2001 should be avoided? Has anyone said the 2001 authorization DOES NOT EXTEND TO IRAN? Has anyone demanded that an Intelligence Estimate be completed and reviewed prior to any decision made? Has anyone recently said that the 700,000,000 of Afganistan money that was illegally transfered to Iraq was an abuse of power and that the flow of money will be carefully monitored with respect to Iran? Has anyone in congress pointed out that already the pentagon's estimate of 10 years for Iran nuke capability conflicts with administration misinformation?

Why are the administration positions on Iran the only ones we hear about?

Shouldn't congress be clarifying its position on Iran, showing that it is providing oversight? Or are we seeing a deliberate disappearing act again?

5. The only Congressmen commentary I've heard so far
regarding Iran sound eerily like those made regarding Iraq before we set out to "liberate" it. I think they want to be fooled. Maxine Waters and that group she just formed should be all over this.

3. Occam's Razor suggests
that the source for Iraqi high explosives is most likely the stolen high explosives we 'forgot' to guard.

How many tons were stolen again?

This smells like Porter Goss style disinformation.

7. When I heard this last night
I said to my wife they're setting up the excuse to invade Iran, it sounded so hokey. The resistance doesn't have to import explosives from anywhere, we know of one complex that had 380 tonnes of high explosives that were left open and unguarded.
I'm sure that there were many more scattered throughout the country, and Iraq had a military, beaten down and depleted to be sure, but, I believe they probably knew how to make shape charges themselves.

8. Cheney told the Pentagon to play war games
about attacking Iran just before he left on vacation. So, if it's by the book let's see...draw down forces in Iraq, attack Iran, use Iraq as a staging area, use newly trained Iraqi forces as backup, commence attack on March 2006, ready set and we're off!

Or maybe it's Syria. Flip a coin.

10. Who cares? We cannot invade Iran, we will be defeated on the battlefield
This might be diversion from the simple fact that Iraq is out of control and we have lost there. They know how to defeat armour with these charges and it doesn't matter where they got the knowledge.

We might win there if the Freepers to a man and woman signed up and martyred themselves there, but there would be nothing left of that country. And precious little left of our country.

Bush's father supposedly beat the "Vietnam syndrome" His dimwit son will reinstall it permanently!

rather than a ground attack, including (someone correct me if I'm wrong) tactical nukes for strongly fortified/buried targets.

the excuse they want to use their cute nukes (low yield tactical "battlefield" Nuclear bombs). The USA will "never" be defeated in the field. The ONLY SANE and EFFECTIVE defense against US agression is exactly what is happening in Iraq today.

Have you ever noticed the gleam in Rumdfield's eyes when he fantasizes about using Nukes?

16. Miller/planted WMDs? Miklaszewski/planted shaped charges??
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 08:03 PM by tiptoe
I wonder if Judith Miller's "confidence" about WMDs in Iraq was based on a source that was privy to a secret plan that failed to plant WMDs within Iraq preceding and during hostilities, as reported by a whistleblower below. WMDs was amongst the "pack of lies" described by MP George Galloway and used to "justify" war with Iraq.

Are we possibly now seeing the same ploy wrt Iran, with Jim Miklaszewski being the conduit?

US tried to plant WMDs, failed: whistleblower 12-08-03 (link to Daily Times Monitor original story fails)

According to a stunning report posted by a retired Navy Lt Commander and 28-year veteran of the Defense Department (DoD), the Bush administration’s assurance about finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was based on a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) plan to “plant” WMDs inside the country. Nelda Rogers, the Pentagon whistleblower, claims the plan failed when the secret mission was mistakenly taken out by “friendly fire”, the Environmentalists Against War report.

Nelda Rogers is a 28-year veteran debriefer for the DoD. She has become so concerned for her safety that she decided to tell the story about this latest CIA-military fiasco in Iraq. According to Al Martin Raw.com, “Ms Rogers is number two in the chain of command within this DoD special intelligence office. This is a ten-person debriefing unit within the central debriefing office for the Department of Defense.”

The information that is being leaked out is information “obtained while she was in Germany heading up the debriefing of returning service personnel, involved in intelligence work in Iraq for the DoD and/or the CIA. “According to Ms Rogers, there was a covert military operation that took place both preceding and during the hostilities in Iraq,” reports Al Martin Raw.com, an online subscriber-based news/analysis service which provides “Political, Economic and Financial Intelligence”.

Al Martin is a retired Lt Commander (US Navy), the author of a memoir called “The Conspirators: Secrets of an Iran-Contra Insider,” and is considered one of America’s foremost experts on corporate and government fraud. Ms Rogers reports that this particular covert operation team was manned by former military personnel and “the unit was paid through the Department of Agriculture in order to hide it, which is also very commonplace”.

"this particular covert operation team was manned by former military personnel"

“This was a contingent of CIA/DoD operatives, but it was really the CIA that bungled it.."

What does "former military personnel" and DoD suggest?

(Who was a former Secretary of Defense?)

Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 10:41 PM by Nothing Without Hope
WARMONGERING. In addition to the three threads in the opening post, there are many other vitally important links in the replies.

Clearly, the neocon cabal wants regime change in Iran. A strong element of the Israeli government wants it too. In fact, "Project Daniel" is an Israeli plan, approved by the Bush Administration, to pre-emptively attack Iranian nuclear reactor sites and if possible other sites that would promote regime change.

Pre-emptive strikes are now official US military policy. It's official.

And all this is in spite of the FACT, as reported Monday in the Washington Post, that the best intelligence (The NIE = National Intelligence Estimate for Iran) shows that Iran is AT LEAST 10 YEARS FROM NUCLEAR BOMB CAPABILITY.

All this and more in this recent thread - PLEASE read it and pass the information along:

24. AND isn't Haliburton working with Iran? If only we could prove...
that Haliburton is supplying the enemy with the bombs to kill our soldiers in Iraq.

The scary thing is that the policy to be "fixed" this time to go to war with Iran is that they have nuclear capability....

Original survey said, "10 years" then Haliburton stepped in and it's been lowered to "5 1/2 years".

NOW the energy bill has a provision to lessen the export restrictions of shipping weapons grade uranium out of the US.... (Why don't you just HAND the Terrorist's the BOMBS, Dick? Oh, good idea George.)

Any body else getting really shit stinking scared of the lengths these crazies will go to in order to have wars over oil and make US pay for them?
