Lyrics for the Atheist
Although I am Christian I do like this song and it makes me stop and think about the hypocrisy of man.

Dear God by XTC
Album: Skylarking

Dear God, hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too!

Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
so do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in

it's you....

Maybe a different song with the same title. Words by Andy Partridge. Music by Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding.

Edit

You are thinking "Fear of God"

4. No, it's the same lyrics
Back around 1990 or so, Guadalcanal Diary had a minor hit with that song.

THe Album was Skylarking so the version by Guadalcanal Diary must have been a remake.

Actually the song Dear God was a "B Side" that got a lot of air play in the UK so they re-released Skylarking, replacing the song "Mermaid Smiled" with “Dear God”. Unfortunately this played havoc with Todd Rundgren's idea of a “Concept Album (he was the producer) as the Album was supposed to be about a persons life from birth to death. Placing “Dear God” in it messed that idea up.

Andy and Todd had a lot of fights. The band almost broke up because of it (Colin Moulding is quoted as saying to Andy "YOu can take this bass and shove it up your ass")

Todays version of Skylarking has the orginal line up with "Dear GOd" as an added track at the end. This keeps the idea of the Concept Album together.

6. Joan Osbourne too
If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome
