Mehlman seeks swift Roberts confirmation

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The head of the Republican Party on Friday faulted some Democrats and liberals who want to turn "a judicial confirmation into a political campaign" and called for swift Senate confirmation of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts.

Ken Mehlman, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, used an address at the organization's annual summer meeting to praise President Bush's domestic record and his selection of Roberts, criticize judicial activism and focus on the party's outreach to black and Hispanic voters.

Mehlman argued that in 1993, President Clinton picked Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a judge with a liberal record, for the high court and Senate Republicans treated her fairly although she declined to answer many specific questions at her confirmation hearing.

1. Mehlman better hurry this up
before the fundies withdraw support because of Roberts' association with an obsure gay-rights case several years back. (Wait 'till this news hits the Southern Baptist Churches!)

2. Well, following the rule that the GOP has done what they accuse of
I guess old Ken has been busy doing just that. Otherwise he would just leave it to the Senate to hash all this out. But, nooo...he has to jump in with his quasi designer army boots and muck things up a bit. What a jerk. :eyes:
