Limbaugh attacked "American media" for tracking Iraq fatalities, but Pentagon does too

Reading from an Associated Press article on his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh attacked "the American media" for "keeping a tally" of U.S. fatalities in Iraq, calling such a practice "sick." But the Department of Defense publicly releases statistics on U.S. deaths in Iraq. These figures are updated regularly to reflect total deaths, non-hostile deaths, those killed in action (KIA), and those wounded in action (WIA).

From the August 3 broadcast of The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: "U.S. death toll in Iraq surpasses 1,800." How do we know? Because the American media's keeping a tally. Right here, I have it in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers. Sameer Yacoub, the AP: "Seven U.S. Marines were killed in two separate attacks west of Baghdad, where American forces were trying to seal a major border infiltration route to foreign fighters. The deaths pushed the U.S. military death toll in Iraq past 1,800."

This is sick. People are keeping a body count on this. As we mentioned yesterday -- all right, a brief time out. We'll be back. We will continue.

6. So KILLING them is just fine; it's the COUNTING that's "sick"?
That kind of logic is, well... SICK!

What sort of DISEASED mind could actually agree with such a twisted premise?

8. Typical RW banter...
don't pay attention to the facts, just support them cause they know best. For the record, the reason there have not been MORE deaths is because of the kevlar vests and helmets these guys wear. There are thousands wounded, and the percentage of wounded with limbs lost is much higher than in previous wars (again, the vests stop damage to the body, saving the soldier's life, although not arms or legs). So, when a RWer justifies whis war by saying "only" 1800 have died and this pales in comparison to Vietnam, WWII, etc., point out the number of wounded (according to antiwar.com, that number is officially 13559 wounded, which, according to the pentagon, are counted as someone injured as a direct result of an insurgent bullet or bomb). How kevlar vests play into the number of wounded I can't say, but I know there is an effect. Just something to think about.

11. See, the deaths aren't the problem, it's the political price Bush pays.
Remove the information, so we don't know about it, then no problem Rush cares about. See this essay by Doctorow wgucg says in part:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4251273
They come to his desk not as youngsters with mothers and fathers or wives and children who will suffer to the end of their days a terribly torn fabric of familial relationships and the inconsolable remembrance of aborted life.... They come to his desk as a political liability which is why the press is not permitted to photograph the arrival of their coffins from Iraq.

How then can he mourn? To mourn is to express regret and he regrets nothing.

13. So we shouldn't keep a count of our dead troops?
Then how will we know if we are winning? :eyes:

Hey Rush, STFU! Just sit back and swallow that oxydrug, hopefully you will OD.
